When to go to the doctor? TMI warning!

DC12 has been feeling sick and having diarrhoea on and off since Saturday.
Last night the diarrhoea has been fairly constant all night, and is just water. This morning he seems a bit confused but possibly because he hasn’t slept.

WWYD? I can’t take him to the GP as he can’t really leave the loo. But it all seems a bit extreme now.

Ensure he drinks plenty of fluids. Get some rehydration powders to restore his electrolytes.

Most bugs can be flushed through in 48 hours. If he's still poorly this evening, I'd check with 111.

The confusion is not normal, I’d get him seen

Make sure he is staying hydrated & get some electrolytes for him.

Ring the doctor for advise.

The confusion would worry me - he’s 12 not 5.

Call 111 for advice and in the meantime get some rehydration sachets and electrolytes in him asap.

He came in a minute ago when I thought he was finally asleep and started talking to me in the wrong language (bilingual family dad one language me another) couldn’t stop him for ages, then he didn’t know what he’d said and carried on in the wrong language, then seemed to snap out of it. I wondered if he was sleepwalking. Told him to go have a shower and he just wandered off.

Thinking back I think more likely sleepwalking/high temp. He’s in the shower now. Poor lamb ☹️

that would concern me, confusion due to temperature? Do you have a thermometer? Is he drinking enough?

BeautifulSongsofLove · 16/02/2026 08:02

There's good advice linked below, I hope DC12 gets well soon.

Have a low threshold, constant diarrhoea and confusion suggests he may be dehydrated and needs A&E input to investigate and rehydrate safely.

If you speak to/have spoken to 111 and they've said to go to urgent care, please go to one that's on the same site as an A&E, and not a minor injury unit/urgent care (as they're not equipped to manage this).

Blimey - A and E needed.

That does sound quite like he was asleep. People whose children don’t do this would probably be very concerned to hear it but I know I can have a whole conversation with my daughter and she can answer questions and appear to be awake but then she’ll say or do something so random I know she’s actually asleep. Sometimes it happens when she’s too hot, or needs the loo. Or it’s just random. How is he after his shower? If he seems fine I’d let him spend the day napping and make sure he gets plenty of fluids.

Confusion is due to dehydration and signs of showing a UTI infection.
Get fluids in him and call 111
