Large credit into account no idea what for

I’ve had a large credit into my bank account today from our local Water board. £600.
Ive no idea what it’s for. We aren’t on a meter, haven’t moved house for over 20 years.
No letter to advise of credit.
No email.
Money just appeared into account today.
Ive no account to login to as can’t find account number.
Im thinking it must be a mistake.
Will call tomorrow but any ideas why a water board may send such a credit when we pay water rates ??

Have ypu checked your latest bills? Checked they are taking the correct amount for the direct debit etc?

Overpayment? Maybe your bill has been wrong for 2025?

Thames water gave us a similar credit this year, based on surface drainage or something (we had a letter). Ours was applied to out water account as credit and not refunded to our bank. Maybe it’s similar? It took about 6 months between receiving the letter and then the credit

We’ve had no letter. Receive an annual bill informing us of our monthly payments (we are on rates not meter).
We pay monthly for 10 months.
The direct debit is always the same so no overpayment by us.
We pay around £800 a year rates so wouldn’t be credited £600 for a year.

Many customers of whichever water company serves the Tunbridge area (and wherever there were all the issues with supply - I forgot where exactly, Southern Water, maybe?) are getting compensation for all the hassle, I believe. Could it be this?
