What is this art style?

I am seeing it everywhere recently, although it mostly came to my attention during the pandemic on artist's spaces. I love abstraction, so am familiar enough, but I am charmed at the same time as bemused by it.

Just wondering if people have any familiarity with this style and do you love it?

How would one describe it?

It looks like blobs?

AsAYouthIUsedToLoveTheSmellOfCatalogues · 15/02/2026 11:21

I think this artist has moved over to depicting more recognisable forms in recent months but it still intrigues me. On the one hand it is charmingly playful, maybe even freeing, but on the other I am, like I said, bemused.

I don’t know the style and I don’t love it, it feeds into my ‘this is why I hate art’ narrative. In fact I don’t hate art but I feel frustrated looking at colour swatches with an expectation to ‘feel something’ other than annoyed it’s not a recognisable picture 🤣

TheTecknician · 15/02/2026 11:29

Looks like large random watercolour strokes. If there's a name for that I don't know it.

Makemineacosmo · 15/02/2026 11:34

I think it's more of a 'some people with throw their money at any old shite' style.

😉

GCAcademic · 15/02/2026 12:01

I can't stand it when people say about art: "my six year old could do that". Because, almost invariably, they couldn't.

However, in this case, it would be a reasonable response.

AsAYouthIUsedToLoveTheSmellOfCatalogues · 15/02/2026 12:14

I prefer abstraction, although this isn't a great example. I think it's an over simplification (this work), it reminds me of childhood, just pure feeling, but it doesn't really translate well to the viewer.

A lot of people love this stuff, a recent 'blob' garnered over 2.5k likes.

I think I am just curious what people see in it, why it would brighten your day enough to become so popular. Maybe it's the simplicity people love??

It's called 'shite'.

Geneticsbunny · 15/02/2026 12:16

Naeive art? Or folk art? This is art created by untrained artists and can be really beautiful.

Geneticsbunny · 15/02/2026 12:17

Apologies. I can't spell very well!

AsAYouthIUsedToLoveTheSmellOfCatalogues · 15/02/2026 12:19

Some more here.
I think the childlike style is intentional, so I personally wouldn't criticise it, there's room for all tastes. I do find it charming tbh, but I can't place why.

I think I agree, but I can't quite define what it is that charms me!

I think it's called Naive Art. But most famous examples are far more complex compositions and colourways than the ones you linked to.

I don't find there's enough in it to want to keep looking. It reminds me of the kind of stuff flogged in the back streets of St Ives by people who churn art out at speed to try and make a living selling to tourists.

Ratty art.

To me they look like initial ideas or sketches that are not developed into anything meaningful yet

I think some of these artists's care more for the 'process' than the finished result. This in itself is a social media trend, which I do feel a bit cynical about. But this stuff really warms me in ways i can't describe, even though I want to dislike it, lol.
I suppose it has me thinking.

Agree , they look like experimental sketches in use of colour, brushwork and shape

LIZS · 15/02/2026 12:30

And probably as a result of the art workshops I keep seeing advertised which are glorified painting by numbers! Suddenly everyone is an artist.

LadyCrustybread · 15/02/2026 12:34

Naive modern expressive watercolor?

HolidayHattie · 15/02/2026 14:02

Looks like art journalling to me. Most of them seem to be in sketchbooks rather than canvases. It's supposed to be for the enjoyment / expression of the artist and not commercial. In terms of genre I would just say abstract (apart from the apples.) I'm no expert, though.

mondaytosunday · 15/02/2026 14:16

Ha @CombatBarbiei was going to say the same! Plus the palette - ugh. As it’s in a sketchbook is it someone you know? It dies look like done one thinking ‘how crap can I paint and still get people to say nice things’? My parents were collectors and my mother ran a gallery and this isn’t cutting it.
@Geneticsbunnyno this isn’t naive or folk art at all.
