Cereal or crisps?

What is better - a standard pack of walkers prawn cocktail crisps OR a small bowl of Fruit and Fibre cereal with whole milk?

I'm thinking in terms of healthwise rather than flavour wise.

(And you're not allowed to say they are as bad as each other as we all sort of know that)

I can’t compare the two? And you wouldn’t eat crisps for breakfast.

And I’ll always choose crisps because I love crisps.

I feel like I’m being asked to choose between an elephant and a penguin.

Read the nutritional label and make your own choice. Maybe to go to the shop and buy some real food.

BorgQueen · 15/02/2026 10:18

Well obviously cereal and milk is more nutritionally balanced than fried, salted potatoes.

I'd say the cereal as at least it would have calcium and fibre, which the crisps wouldn't.

TBH I’d have thought it very obvious! Who ever thought crisps could be ‘healthy’? You’d have to be unbelievably dim!

Most cereals are not healthy either. It’s not as obvious as you think.

liveforsummer · 15/02/2026 10:33

Probably depends on your individual health needs and the rest of your diet in the day. There’s not a straightforward answer

Depends on the cereal, doesn’t it? Wholewheat cereals are a lot better than anything laden with sugar - and so many are.

That’s why I said ‘most’ as there aren’t many that are not laden with sugar, but there are some! OP specifically names fruit and diverse which is both high in sugar from the added sugar in the fibre part and the dried fruit making it not a great choice for someone needing a low sugar diet. In that case they’d probably be better with a pack of crisps

You've cracked it.

I'm unbelievably dim. Cheers.

And I have ended up eating both as I was feckin' starving.

Nice 😄

As you say, neither are great - they're both quite sugary and processed - but the cereal does at least have the benefit of giving you fibre intake, which is beneficial for digestion, and if you're having it with milk, you're getting some calcium as well; the crisps don't add anything nutritionally other than their basic calorie count. So overall the cereal is a better choice nutritionally.

You're not dim. In some circumstances crisps can make more sense as a snack - if you're counting calories, a small bag of crisps usually has fewer calories than a bowl of cereal, and no need to weigh/measure and no risk of 'portion creep' - shaking extra in and kidding yourself that you're not!

However, you haven't said that you're trying to lose weight, so the cereal offers more nutrition, as I said in my previous post.
