So I live in kidbrooke walking distance to both pure gym and DL I joined DL as I have back pain for swimming and spa which I use 3 days a week minimum but I don’t use the classes or gym as I don’t like the set up of there gym no private studio area to do your stretching etc so feels uncomfortable doing that front everyone standing behind me but cost is 240 a month. The other option for my back is recumbent bike treadmill etc in pure gym and I can do my own workout and stretches in there studio area more private get my workout done all in one go for £20 a month but no swimming or spa what would you all choose?

I find the time I go in the morning is very quiet and studio is always available around that time but it’s very busy from 4 pm on but I don’t tend to use the gym peak times but yes I agree I’m learning to focus on myself and shut out everything else which helps.

Aside from the pool at DL, I don't get what it offers over a normal gym. They seem to have a bog customer base though so I must be missing something

It’s a ‘lifestyle’ you know. I think my MIL
goes for a chat.

Would you be willing to travel a bit OP? You could try third space gym in Canary Wharf which is David Lloyd price, has a good swimming pool I believe and loads of different training areas so you could do stretches etc. You could get the train to Lewisham then DLR.

In your situation I would go to Pure gym. Spend £220 on therapy, learning yoga Nidra, meditation, acupuncture, massages and sort out my anxiety.
The go swimming a couple of times a week in a normal pool you have one.

HopSpringsEternal · 15/02/2026 08:49

Should add I have been members at both and apart from the pool or if you play tennis not much in it.

Loopytiles · 15/02/2026 08:54

Sounds like your anxiety is affecting you, eg your thoughts about the gym and stretch areas and avoidance of using them. You’re not getting full value and could address that, but three times a week is a fair bit if you enjoy the swimming and spa.

I personally found recumbent bike unhelpful for my back issues (as it’s still sitting, which is often a factor in the problem) and boring: swimming and rehab gym exercises with bodyweight, machines and light weights were the best, then treadmill walking and (later) elliptical.

If I could afford that DL I absolutely would be a member there. Sounds to me like you can afford both tbh.

What about Colfe’s or Sutcliffe Park? They can’t be too far away.

Wuds · 15/02/2026 10:28

Yeah I’m defiantly getting much better with the anxiety to be fair, I was a sahm for 10 years only just returned back to work and gym so it was all daunting for me being out of social world for so long but the more I’m getting out and doing it the more myself I’m becoming and it feels great tbh. but just wasn’t sure if 239 a month was worth swimming and spa that’s all!

The only things my back feels good with are swimming and bike, sometimes I find bike is better as swimming can aggravate at times as it arches my back but it’s healing so right now they both feel fine!. Yeah bike can be boring but I just watch podcast or music on my headphones.
