I had an infected tooth. Got antibiotics tooth seemed to clear up and pain wasn't bad. I needed tooth out which I had done today. I have to say that im in worse pain than with the infection. I cannot do strenuous activities or housework or bending down or do any lifting. If I do this could cause dry socket which im terrified of getting as its very painful. I feel awful

Didn't want to read and run but I think your'e incredibly brave as its something I just couldn't do myself.

I had childhood trauma with having four teeth in one sitting aged around 12 yrs not because they were bad but because I needed to make room for others as i was fitted with a brace.

I've never been so terrified in my life. I hope you get sorted soon.

The first few days are rough with tooth removal. Make you take whatever pain meds recommended, maximum dose and take it really easy - just like you would with post-op. It does get progressively better and it won't bother you as much each day, as long as you are following all of the guidelines.

Yeah. Im supposed to meet up with friends on Saturday to gp to a museum. That is not a strenuous activity and if I take some painkillers I should be ok

I had a tooth out a few weeks ago as well, OP! I have to say I was not in much pain. But I really wouldn’t sweat it! As PP said, max the paracetamol, don’t drink in a manner that will create a vacuum etc.

Surprised you were told not to even clean the house or bend over! I walked the dogs 90 minutes after mine was done. My dentist said as long as I wasn’t going ballistic it was fine. And it was😳

wishfulthinking25 · 12/02/2026 20:29

I had 2 x lower wisdom teeth removal and was in a lot of pain but managed by paracetamol / ibuprofen. Felt fine after a few days with 1 side, I got dry socket with the other and I was also terrified of getting this, however it really wasn’t as bad as it’s made out to be, for me anyway

I think it depends on the tooth

I had a wisdom tooth out about 10 years ago woth hardly any pain and it completely healed in about 2 weeks

PerkyOchrePeer · 15/02/2026 06:33

I've come back to thus thread because when I had my tooth out, I panicked due ti a couple of things the dentist said could happen whilst taking out the tooth. Because if this, the dentist wanted me to be calm so she said if I didn't relax she would sedate me. I was horrified because I dont like the idea of sedation abd I was on my own and when you are sedated you need soneone with you to take you home and stay with you for an hour or so to make sure you are OK. I just googled and it said people should not be sedated on the spur of the moment sedation has to be planned in advance so you can arrange for someone to be with you.

Also, when I questioned whether I need to see my dentist after about a week to check the gun was healing properly she said no surely ant surgery you should have a check up whether oral surgery or any other. Im going to contact the surgery where I had the tooth out and raise my concern about the sedation as its not prodessional

Prior to the tooth extraction, the tooth was infected but I have to say i feel worse after the extraction than the infection. Its only been 2 days I dont count Thursday because it was taken out in he afternoon, but ive had referred pain on my other teeth and headaches which isn't nice. . I've booked a check up at my own dentist for Friday just to see how it's healing. Im going away in early March abd want to be able to eat normally, especially as I will be flying and eating plane food in fed up of eating soup and porridge and scrambled eggs

How Is your pain today OP?
asking as I had a tooth out the day after you and I’m still in considerable pain 😩

Re your dentist, I would definitely complain about them using sedation as a threat! I actually asked if I could have sedation as I get so nervous/scared and was told it isn’t generally an option at a usual dentist and requires referral to a specialist (I have a NHS dentist).

Also, about a check up, I was given a check up appointment for 3 months time. Was told unless there is a particular issue, I won’t need to go back any sooner as everything should just be left alone to heal.

Hope you’re ok OP

I had a tooth out on Friday. I have antibiotics and an taking paracetamol. I rinse very gently, no swilling, with salt water three times a day and am using antiseptic mouth wash after eating. I am going back to have the stitches out and the socket checked next week. I am not in pain.

I did not need stitches but surely they are dissolvable so dont need taking out. Im exhausted though because im not sleeping properly at night due to the discomfort but the discomfort should wear off soon. Its only need 2 days after all

I was advised not to lift, bend, drink with a straw, after a complicated extraction by a max fax surgeon, because it can dislodge the blood clot that forms over the cavity. I obeyed to the letter. 3 days later,Dry Socket! It was just before Christmas. That year everything closed from Christmas Eve to new year. There wasn't even an emergency dentist open, local hospital didn't do dental.I didn't bleed after extraction, no blood clot. I thought I would go mad with the pain, it was 4 weeks overall. After new year, first emergency appointment, given abx, which didn't help. Then original surgeon packed the cavity with ribbon gauze and clover solution. I know people who have had morphine for a Dry Socket. The bone and nerve are exposed, that's what causes the pain. Sutures were dissolvable, there wouldn't be a follow up appointment normally. Of course, when you are numbed with a local anaesthetic, you feel just tugging and pulling, it can cause bruising, pain, but usually minimal. My DH had wisdom teeth impacted removed both sides, his face really swelled, but not much pain. Ds had his removed in hospital, general anaesthetic, little pain. Sounds like you have had the worst of it.

If you did everything iou were supposed to do why dud you get dry socket? Was it because no clot formed. I had my tooth put on Thursday and I an dye to go to work Monday in the office which means carrying my laptop and headphones and notebook. I usually use a shoulder bag but do gade a bag on wheels which would not involve carrying, but it would involve carrying the bad down a flight if stairs at home andcarryung it on and off the train abd that would mean lifting

I also gave been using my dishwasher which involves bending to load and unload

I don't bleed after tooth extractions,no blood clot formed.. think of it, like an open fracture of a bone, with the bone and nerves exposed!

Hope your pain eases soon. I’ve had three extractions over the past few years. In all cases, I had minimal pain and was back to normal activities, including weightlifting, the day after the extraction.

I got dry socket with one of them (also just before Xmas like PP!) but it actually wasn’t that painful- it was certainly considerably less painful than the infection that had lead to the extraction. I didn’t have to go back for any checks after extraction (although I did with the dry socket because it needed to be packed with gauze and clove oil).

Definitely book in and get checked if you’re worried about your healing.

You are not supposed to do heavy lifting the day after the extraction. I wouldn't dare risk it

Im not going to lie, Im terrified of getting dry socket. I was the same when I had sciatica as I knew someone whohad sciatica and lost complete feeling in her leg and it never came back and j thought it would happen to me but it didnt

I wasn’t suggesting you do heavy lifting. But it’s part of my job and the dentist said it would be fine. (I don’t think it caused the dry socket- I lifted weights the day after all my extractions but I only got dry socket once). I specifically asked the dentist about returning to work and told him what my job entails and he said just take the rest of the day off and you should be fine to go back tomorrow- I was! I’m sorry your experience has turned out to be more painful and difficult. For me, the extractions and the dry socket were a walk in the park compared to the actual infections I had before the extractions.

Waitingfordoggo · 15/02/2026 13:25

Is your extraction top or bottom? I heard dry sockets are more common on the top.

Mine was on the bottom! I was absolutely terrified of dry socket too but didn’t get it on my first two extractions. I got it on the third and whilst it was unpleasant and uncomfortable, it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be. I’m now in the process of having an implant fitted in the gap 🤞

NecklessMumster · 15/02/2026 13:27

Can you see a dentist before Friday? I think a normal extraction should be settling down painwise by now. I had an infected tooth out in November, it hurt like hell from the minute it was out and painkillers never touched it. I ended up with dry socket despite doing everything right, I think it was the traumatic extraction and infection that caused it. Ive had teeth out before but never that amount of pain

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 15/02/2026 13:32

There’s a dental rinse you can buy called Gengigel First Aid Oral fluid. It is for use after dental surgery and contains hyaluronic acid to moisturise and heal. I find it genuinely unpleasant to use. It’s sort of gelatinous and you have to gently hold and move it around your mouth for more than a minute but goodness me it works. Amazon and Boots sell it. Don’t muddle it up with the regular Gengigel mouthwash which is good but not specifically for post-surgery like this one. You want the red packaging, not the blue.

PineappleGummyBear · 15/02/2026 13:38

Dry socket is painful, but it isn't really any more painful than the issue that caused the tooth to be removed in the first place imo.

That said, dentists can redress the extraction site. I've had dry socket and had to go to the dentist to get it redressed and the immediate relief I felt was immense. If it's still unbearable, call the dentist to get it seen to. I'm sorry you're having so many problems, the dentist doesn't seem very nice.
