Luggage on a budget airline - what do I need to know?

I’ve never flown with a budget airline before (never had the opportunity)
I’ve flown with TUI though for example.

so I’m looking at booking a short flight with easy jet and I’m beyond confused (it doesn’t take much for that to happen)

without paying extra it sounds like I’m only allowed a backpack that can fit under my seat is that right?
if so would there be a size and weight limitation?

if I were to want to pay to add luggage it sounds like I can only add a small cabin bag. Is that one of the usual small wheely suitcase types that fit in the overhead locker thing?

is it unusual to be able to add an actual suitcase to go in the hold?

I also see mentions of “add speedy boarding” should I bother?

thank you in advance for all replies

This seems quite straightforward https://www.easyjet.com/en/help-centre/policy-terms-and-conditions/fees-charges

all I could say is follow the rules and the measurements include wheels and handles. I’ve never had an issue with Ryanair

you get an "underseat bag" included as standard. This is a small backpack or large handbag sort of size (check the dimensions carefully) but doesn't have a weight limit. You do need to sit with it under the seat in front though so not idealy if you're tall or have a longer flight. If you're only going for a night or two this might be sufficient.
Then you can pay to add a larger cabin bag - the small wheelie case type size which goes in the overhead lockers. The weight limit on these is usually 10kg but check and also check the size which needs to include the wheels.
You can also pay to put an even larger bag in the hold.
Speedy boarding just means you get to sit on the plane for longer! Some people buy it if they've got an overhead locker bag because space for these can be limited and towards the end of the queue they sometimes make you put them in the hold.

Speedy boarding certainly isn’t needed. In fact, if you pay for a cabin wheely with Ryannair you get this automatically - I think because they want people on first who need to use the overhead locker.

Fast track security is different though and if you have an early morning flight it can be a good idea (unless you have a very quiet airport).

Edited

easyJet have a weight limit of 15kg for the cabin bag...

MiddleAgedDread · 11/02/2026 16:46

Well you’re never going to hit 15kg in an underseat bag unless you’re transporting lead weights! 🤣

I've just flown with easyjet. A small under-seat bag is included in the ticket price. Then you can pay an extra fee for a larger cabin bag (15kg?) + speedy boarding and/or an extra fee for a bag in the hold + pre-booked choice of seat.

IIRC there was only a couple of £ difference between the two extra options so I just went for the hold option which gave me up to 23kg and I didn't have to faff about with liquids at security as they all just went in the case.
