Why does my washing machine smell bad?!

P0loGirl · 11/02/2026 14:17

— it’s used regularly at temps between 30-60 degrees
it never has clothes just sitting in it, wet or dry
it’s emptied immediately at the end of a cycle
the clothes are usually just lightly dirty, I’m not shoving it full of filthy dog blankets every day.
I use a good laundry detergent

And it still smells bad…..why?!

Is there mould around the seal? If so you can get bleach gel to remove it.

isthismylifenow · 11/02/2026 14:18

Have you cleaned out the filter at the bottom?

Shinyandnew1 · 11/02/2026 14:18

Have you cleaned out the filter at the bottom? Are you using powder or liquid?

Try buying a mashing machine cleaner and putting that through it. I tend to wash towels on a hot wash from time to time as well. Oh, and leave the door open!

I don't know, but I have the same problem. The current machine is the smelliest one we have ever had. We have found a self-cleaning cycle and put cleaner in there and run it through regularly. That seems to keep it at bay. But no idea why this happens

Perhaps the mashing causes the smell…!

Do you leave the door open when it's empty?

Rollercoaster1920 · 11/02/2026 14:31

Always dry the rubber seal with a cloth and leave the door open when not in use so it dries out.

Every month or two run through a cleaning wash with soda crystals, and clean the filter.
Pull out the liquid drawer for a deep clean of the gunge in there. Even if you don't use the drawer.

SleepingisanArt · 11/02/2026 14:33

Do you ever 'clean' your machine? Every 8 weeks (as advised by the manufacturer but reminded by the machine) I clean mine. You put cheap bio washing powder into the drawer, run the machine on the hottest setting with an empty drum. At the end wipe the door and seal. (You can use a washing machine cleaner but I was told the bio powder works just as well.)

Keepoffmyartichokes · 11/02/2026 14:36

We had this, we cleaned it when it asked to be cleaned, I left the door open when it wasn't on and it still smelt. Then I cleaned the filter and there was a bracelet from someone's pocket in the filter. The smell has now gone.

Ha ha!

Can I ask those of you who use soda crystals in the washing machine…do you put them inside drum or in the drawer?

ShakyBake · 11/02/2026 14:41

I'm not sure of the services in your area but we have a man known in the community as Destinker (no Idea of his real name) but he cleans wheelie bins for £3, drains for £10 (including rodding) and guttering for £12.
He recently started a washing machine option for £3 or free if buying any 2 of the other services. He has a ferret and will leave it under your floorboards for an hour, or however long it takes Destinker to complete other jobs, if you purchase everything

P0loGirl · 11/02/2026 14:46

Thanks everyone!
No mould that I can see
Haven’t emptied filter, will give that a try
Will also leave door open after a wash, haven’t been doing that either

@Shinyandnew1 I put them in the drum then run a hot wash, 60 or higher, or a drum clean.

Pedallleur · 11/02/2026 15:59

Soda crystals, concentrated vinegar, a specialist cleaner. It's about moving the old soap and dirt. The hot wash helps break down the soap. Leaving the door open allows standing water to evaporate.

minipie · 11/02/2026 16:01

Run your fingers under the seal and see what you find. Chances are there’s a whole load of gunk there. Needs cleaning out.

That's ridiculously cheap! Where does this man live and how big a cut is the ferret taking? Grin

DaisyChain505 · 11/02/2026 16:03

You need to leave the door and drawer open when not being used.

HappiestSleeping · 11/02/2026 16:04

Other than the solutions suggested above, I put bleach in mine, let if fill, then pause it for the bleach to do it's thing in all the pipes. Only do this once a year in addition to cleaning the door seal, filter etc. I put the powder drawer through the dishwasher to clean that.

Seawolves · 11/02/2026 16:05

Do you use anti limescale tablets? I find they really help (along with leaving the door open and taking out the dispenser drawer and allowing that to dry after use).

Freda69 · 11/02/2026 16:11

Always keep the door open and regularly clean it. My machine tells me to run a cleaning programme every 40 washes.

I think leaving the door open will be your answer!

Ifeelsickandshocked · 11/02/2026 16:21

Our machine doesn't have a filter we can clean, so that makes it impossible.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/02/2026 16:33

I had this and had to buy a new washing machine in the end, nothing I tried sorted it.

FoamShrimps · 11/02/2026 16:36

I try and clean the filter and drawer every couple of months and run a 90 degree wash with those washing machine cleaner things you can get, always leave the door open when not in use, no smell
