Anyone else find themselves avoiding dramas these days? (books/TV)

I used to love a drama or thriller (not horror). But the last couple of years I’ve found myself increasingly avoiding them. Life feels heavy and the world feels heavy and I just can’t bring myself to read or watch heavy things as well. I’m listening to a good book but the main character is suffering domestic violence and I’m just finding it too sad. I would have loved to watch the new lord of the flies adaptation a few years back. But with descriptions like “harrowing” in reviews I just can’t face it. I don’t enjoy the light hearted stuff as much as I used to enjoy the drama thrillers, but now that stuff just depresses me.

Anyone else noticed a shift to more light hearted stuff?

Same, totally the same. I think I got turned off it all when I was pregnant, and then went through some challenging things just generally. I couldn’t cope with anything grim or dark anymore. I’ve run a mile from anything to do with sexual abuse for a long time.

I can handle a glossy campy thriller - which normally means rich women embroiled in a murder for some reason or another. It’s normally got Nicole Kidman in it.

Or mostly anything Bravo or a ‘cosy’ mystery.

Think the darkest I’ll go is a true crime documentary, but I certainly don’t want to see stuff acted out. I like the resolution, that the bad guys got caught.

You couldn’t pay me to watch anything bleak. It just stays with me too much…

Me! At least some of the time. I don’t fancy lord of the flies either! When I’m feeling particularly anxious I struggle to watch anything that I haven’t watched before! Or is a bit mindless like Stacey Solomon’s sort your life out!
When I’m feeling more positive I still love a good crime drama or adventure film. Sometimes my DH sort of has to ‘force’ me cos once I get going I enjoy it!
A hard no the horror or dystopian stuff.

I was traumatised just reading Lord of the Flies at school, no way am I watching it! I do enjoy a good detective drama, but I can’t stomach explicit violence or dramas that are all doom and gloom. You’re right OP, life is stressful enough.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/02/2026 20:07

I found Cat-man a soothing balm.

Ive never liked detective or thriller tv. It always seems to be about men harming females.

Ive rewatched Motherland and am looking forward to the McKenzie Crook new comedy.

I never get bored of Motherland. Or Downton Abbey. It all about what you choose to watch!

I don't watch anything about murder or missing people. Life Is stressful enough and there's so much misery in the news. I don't want to watch pretend misery. Or true crime documentaries.

Hightideattheseaside · 10/02/2026 20:10

I’m exactly the same @Smartiepants79 always rewatch stuff when I’m anxious. It’s like my brain can only cope of if I know the ending. I have found myself googling the ending of things recently if I have gone with a drama just to see if characters are going to be ok. Looking forward to the new McKenzie Crook comedy.

any other light hearted recommendations? Not romance so much but more cosy drama I guess?! Though I don’t mind a bit of romance if it’s not too cheesy.

I'm currently watching Younger on Netflix. It's really silly and in the glossy New York trendy scene but I'm a bit addicted. It's also about the publishing industry which I am interested in.

Only Murders in the Building is really good and isn't much about murder despite its name. It's funny and light.

Buscobel · 10/02/2026 20:42

I can only cope with light reading these days and don’t watch horror or gory stuff. I often rewatch things too. I’ve stopped feeling that I should read and watch highbrow stuff.
