Anyone been to New York in July/August? How hot?

How hot will it be? Obviously I can see the average temperature by having a quick look online, but what does the heat feel like? Oppressive, quite pleasant, overwhelming, just like anywhere else hot? Husband has booked a family trip, which for many reasons I don't want to go on, but I need to start preparing. Also, are there many shops you can get "British" food? Both my kids are fussy eaters, and to avoid taking suitcases full of Walkers ready salted crisps, bread and Weetabix, I'd like to find out if there will be food available to get them through a week, which is the longest they'll have ever been away from home....

It’s usually very hot and sticky.

I was there last summer. Temperatures ranged from 29 to 36. Best bet is to be out early/late when it’s slightly cooler and leave the middle of the day for air conditioned places and a rest in the hotel. We didn’t let it stop us doing most things. Just dress in light cool fabrics and have plenty of water.

Regarding the Statue of Liberty I booked two weeks before for the pedestal and it was fine, plenty of tickets. Also not sure what the pp means about needing your passport? You just need to scan your ticket before you get on - our passports were in the hotel safe all week!

The subway is a killer but generally you’re not stood on the platform for more than 4 or 5 minutes and a lot of the trains have air con.

I don’t really know about British food but big Targets will have loads of choice so you can stock up there on a lot of things.

I’ve been summer and winter and would take summer any time despite the heat, I love the general vibe, there’s so many more outdoor things going off, picnic in the park, night time entertainment etc.

We went I think 10 years ago and when we went to book in they asked to see our passports. I didn’t have mine (DH had his, mine was in the safe in the hotel) and was told I couldn’t board without it. I was able to use my social media to prove my identity and they let us on. Had a bit of a panic though as we were ages away from the hotel and would have missed our allocated time.

We were there in the heatwave last summer, it was high 30s and like an oven. It’s a shame as it makes it uncomfortable to get around and do lots of sightseeing. Take advantage of jet lag and get out early before it gets too hot (book the first ferry for Liberty/Ellis Island for example), long lunch in aircon, and indoor activities, then back outside after 6pm when it cools a little. Passport not needed for Liberty.

There are a few Targets which sell snack stuff, and Trader Joes.

I didn’t notice a stink!

Long clothes in natural fibres will be fine, sunglasses, and take a trip to Lids for a personalised baseball cap each. Walk on the shady side of the street, buy chilled water for a dollar on every street corner. Take the ferries or the Circle Line boat trip.

NY looks fabulous at night too, go over to the public roof terrace on the Time Out Market in Brooklyn and admire the view.

Many of the subways are hotter than Hades!

Me and our DD went a couple of years ago in July.
People had told me that it's humid. I thought that we would be fine having spent 4 years living in Thailand and lots of time every year in Seville.
I had the worst 4 days of my life.
It was sweaty, ho, smelly and expensive.
Never again

Not only is it too hot, it absolutely stinks in the height of summer. It’s still my favorite city though

I came on to say about the smell too!

Also OP air conditioning might not be the solution you think it is. IME air conditioning might can be brutal ( you can sometimes feel the draft) esp in cinemas, theatres, restaurants. So you escape the heat and end up freezing!

However, I’d go to NY in a heartbeat!
