Infected tooth

PerkyOchrePeer · 09/02/2026 22:31

I've got an infected tooth. It started yesterday. I got some antibiotics today from the dentist and he suggested taking ibuprofen. The pharmacy said nurofen is better so I got that. The instructions said take 1 or 2 tablets so I took 2. They worked quickly. 6 hours later they have worn off and ive got nasty toothache again. Im not sure whether to take 1 or 2 uve never had any painkillers where they say 1 or 2. All others say take 2 im concerned that if u take just 1 it wont ve enough to kill the pain. When I took 2 earlier it was marvellous but you can only take 6 in a 24 hour period so these will wear off at 4am and I will need more and will need more to last until 19am and that the 6 tablets. Then what? I cannot cope with this pain abd the pain will go on longer than the maximum dose allowed

Im not phoning nhs 111. They take too long to get back to you. Last tine I walked them i waited 12 hours for a call back which is disgusting

I had an abscess last week and took Nuromol, instead of Nurofen.

I took 1 at bedtime, and then if it woke me up through the night I could take one more to carry me through till the morning.

I probably did take more than the recommended amount, but can confirm I’m still alive this week.

Nurofen is just ibuprofen. So two tables are fine for each dose. (assuming 200mg per tablet).

As you know, you can take 3 doses of two tables per day. So you can either take them every 8 hours, with paracetamol in between. Or you can take them at say 9am, 3pm, 9pm and then hope that you're okay overnight.

Once you're asleep, you may not need a night-tme dose. If you do, you can adjust and perhaps do every 7 hours, again adding paracetamol if needed.

The antibiotics will help soon, so it shouldn't be longer than a couple days.

When I had one last year I alternated between paracetamols and nurofen. Using panadol extra, usually paracetamols don’t do much for me but these worked a treat.

OverTired26 · 09/02/2026 22:44

I feel for you though, this is a horrid pain. Alternating paracetamol and brufen does work well, as does the over the counter co-codamol with brufen if you really need a top up!

Why did you take nuromol? I've never heard of it

The only thing that touched the sides before I got antibiotics was Paramol - you have to ask the pharmacist for it.

My stepdad has a back problem that he takes it for when it’s bad, my mum told me it exists.

It’s just a combined tablet of 500mg paracetamol and 200mg ibuprofen per tablet.

JLbaby · 09/02/2026 23:00

Have you tried orajel? It’s a gel you rub on to the tooth/gum and really helps. I used the extra strength one recently and helped me until I could get my tooth sorted.

I've used orajel in the past. It is good but wears off too quickly and gives your mouth a numb feeling like an injection. To be honest i prefer painkillers

I recommend swapping the paracetamol for Cocodomal as its stronger (if you can use it) and also carry on with the nurofen. Cocodamol can make some people feel nauseous and tired, but I find this combination of the 2 painkillers the best for easing toothache. Toothache is the worse kind of pain , hope it gets better soon

Lotsalotsagiggles · 09/02/2026 23:13

Best thing I swear by

Dampen tea bags, hold it by infected tooth

It naturally reduces inflammation and draws out infection

Game changer...

notvsure · 09/02/2026 23:14

solphadine? Think that’s how you spell it cut right through my pain from an infected tooth

Cocodamol doesn't have any adverse effects for everyone (they don't for me) , but of course it is different for everyone. That is just my go to with bad tooth pain, take the 2 painkillers combined.

If nurofen alone is enough for pain the alternating paracetmol and iburofen will probably cover it.
