What’s the loveliest present you’ve received as a new parent?

I’m very excited about the imminent arrival of my DS and his DP’s first baby. We are going to do the decent thing and stay away until they’re ready for visitors, but when we do go, I’d like to take something special for the new mum. She’s been so brilliant through quite a stressful pregnancy, and deserves something lovely. They’ve already got a stack of baby stuff from various friends and family, so I don’t want to add anything else to that.
Does anyone have anything, practical or frivolous, that they were given as a first time parent that really hit the spot? TIA

Big fluffy dressing gown with a hood from DH - I lived in it for the first 6 months (much to the midwife's amusement!).

Why was the midwife visiting for six months? I'm sorry if something went wrong.

TBF my midwives thought it highly amusing that I was always washed and dressed and the house was tidy.

I got a bottle of Chanel number 5 bath oil ( sadly it's now discontinued) but the scent still reminds me of new born stage.
Can you get the mum some lovely bath stuff?.

Can I adopt you as my MIL, OP? 💗

New PJ’s, slippers, dressing gown, just eat voucher, and a basket of grab n go snacks oh and decent coffee or a coffee machine or pods whatever they have!

Rainbow890 · 10/02/2026 15:20

My mum walked straight up to me and hugged me and husband first and told us well done/congratulations/how proud etc before she turned to meet our baby. It's one of my most special and vivid memories of the whole experience. She also gave me a bottle of Clinique Baby Bouquet perfumes

You sound like you are going to be a wonderful grandma and mother in law. Congratulations

Not quite the same, but I once had a serious operation and was off work for 6 months. Friends brought me the usual flowers or chocolates or wine. One friend made up a pamper package for me, with little individually wrapped gifts. Mainly small toiletries, nail varnish etc but I also remember a beautiful scarf. It was so lovely that she’d gone to so much trouble, and I opened one gift per day over a couple of weeks. Still tearing up remembering it now 25 years on!

When I came home from hospital there was a massive F&M hamper waiting with beautiful champagne and all sorts of goodies. I had champagne on ice that evening and I was thrilled!

KmcK87 · 10/02/2026 15:21

This was over 20 years ago now but one gift that sticks in my mind was a nice bath milk and body lotion scent from boots! I remember my first bath after having my baby and it was just heaven!

I would really appreciate a gift voucher for a massage/pedicure but I know some people don’t like leaving their newborns.

Would always appreciate food, snacks from M&S, nice cake etc

Hermyknee · 10/02/2026 15:24

buy a toy box instead of a wicker hamper and fill it with food.

Thanks. This is great, because I’ve already batch cooked quite a few meals.
I'd like to get something more personal, really, but it’s so long since I had DC that I can’t think what would be best.

You can get some really lovely jewlerry with either babies birthstone or name/initials on, it depends what her taste is obviously but I would have really appreciated that. I felt totally neglected after I had my baby so just the fact you’re doing something for her will mean a lot, whatever that may be.

When my DS was born over 32 years ago, my lovely MIL gave me a stack of old towels which she had cut down and hemmed the loose edges. I was a bit nonplussed but thanked her for her time and effort. This turned out to be the most useful gift I received! It was before muslins were available and I remember thinking that someone should make a commercial version of them.

Muslims were definitely available back then. However, does sound a very useful gift.

GingerKombucha · 10/02/2026 15:32

Some kind of beautiful, soft (but washable) big pashmina type scarf - I felt like I looked rubbish so lovely things I could drape myself in were welcome and great for breastfeeding. Also, champagne. If you want to spend a bit more, I might in a luxurious but baby friendly hotel for the three of them.

anma302 · 10/02/2026 15:33

I think a little hamper with some self care things.
Bubble bath for a bit of me time, hand cream
Or even a nice basket of fruit.

helpagal · 10/02/2026 15:35

The necklace idea is lovely but this is something I’d expect from DH as a push present or Mother’s Day gift more than from in-laws.

I’d make a little hamper or even just fill a gift bag with some things you know she’d like. Things I got which I loved- mummy and daddy mugs (next always do these), my fave chocolate, dry shampoo, cosy pyjamas, cook voucher, champagne, biscuits, voucher for a massage

CheekyRaven · 10/02/2026 15:53

A pamper day for 2 people.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 10/02/2026 15:54

My best friend made me a lovely basket of really simple but thoughtful things. Some hard bottomed full slippers, a button up dressing gown, some face and hair masks, some satin covered hair bobbles, a big water flask cup thingy, some different flavoured tea bags, some cheap word search books - these helped the most for me when I was having post partum anxiety and some sweets and biscuits.

Everything came in so handy and it was very thoughtful.

rogueone · 10/02/2026 15:57

A lovely chocolate cake -

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 10/02/2026 15:58

Cookies, cheese, luxury shower gel. A nice tunic top - I got my SIL a Zara grey fake snake tunic top she loved it and used it all the time. See also buttoned blouses.

Mum2KSS · 10/02/2026 15:59

My lovely aunt gifted me some beautiful gold earrings when my eldest was born, he's now 24 and I still wear them on special occasions, they are even more special to me now as my aunt is no longer with us.

Motheroftheb · 10/02/2026 16:01

Olderandboulder · 09/02/2026 16:34

These are all great suggestions - I’m thinking about cherry picking lots of them for a hamper!

I think a hamper is a lovely idea - luxury shower gel, favourite chocolates, bags of high energy snacks like nuts, bottle of bubbly etc would be very welcome by me.

MyLoyalAmberHelper · 10/02/2026 16:01

I got my daughter delivery of scones from the cornish company and a heated airer, which has been invaluable.

Livemenot · 10/02/2026 16:03

I loved when people got me flowers, food hampers, toys for when my baby grows up, small toys/attention to my older child so he doesn’t feel left out 😊 oh, I remembered I got a nice Rituals foamy shower gel for myself that was lovely 🥰

however I really appreciated all the gifts, as I know how hard it is to know what to get 🎁

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 10/02/2026 16:03

I forgot, I was gifted an instant pot, and a book of one pan meal recipes. Made those early days of cooking faster and easier to clean.

AluckyEllie · 10/02/2026 16:06

Family photoshoot voucher?
