Dwp approved id for a 17 year old

Ds2 is 17. He's at college, has a provisional driving licence but no passport. He's never had a job.

The dwp want me to send them 3 forms of id for him and they've given me a list of what is acceptable. He's got a provisional driving licence for one but I'm struggling with the other 2. One of the options is a letter from an educational establishment. Will an email printed out do and does it have to be a special letter or can I just print out a copy of whatever email from them I can find. I can't remember when we last had a paper letter from school/college, it's all paperless now. I don't know what to do about the 3rd form of id either. They have said his birth certificate can't be used but he hasn't got a p60 or an electric bill. Just realised it says the documents must be original so no email print outs.

Ask the bank for a letter or statement showing he holds an account.

I sent the letter DS got with his National insurance number, his passport and a hospital appointment letter addressed to him.

Your son's college will be able to supply an official letter stating that he is a registered student there.

Bank statement? You can downland them normally

We went through similar for my DS (17) to get a DBS certificate and it was surprisingly tricky!

For the college letter, I just called his college and explained that he needed a letter confirming that he was a student at the college and whatever other details they needed on there. It sounded like they had had the request numerous times in the past and sent it that day (they emailed and my son also picked one up from college). It wasn’t a problem at all.

We also used an annual bank statement as it had his address on it. We were a bit concerned it wouldn’t be accepted as the letter was addressed to me as the c/o person until he’s 18, but the statement had DS as the named account holder and they accepted it.

I think his 3rd was his passport as he didn’t have a provisional driving licence at that point.

What is it needed for? What benefit and what purpose?

I didn’t have ID to send for my claim. Instead they gave me an appointment at my local job centre which I attended & the job centre filled out everything they needed for my claim while I just sat there. I just took in the things I did have like proof of address, birth certificate & bank statement. As I don’t have a passport or driving license.

LIZS · 09/02/2026 16:39

Do they need to be recent? Any nhs appointment letters, ask for a bank statement in branch?

Iloveeverycat · 09/02/2026 16:53

Why do you need the ID for him.

What can be downloaded can be faked or forged.

elliejjtiny · 09/02/2026 19:20

Thank you. It has to be an original document so I can't download and print anything. Not sure if it has to be recent or not.

It's for his PIP application. I started it in July last year but they keep asking for more documents, to set up a separate bank account. Its been a massive hassle and I'm dyslexic so struggle with forms at the best of times.

If it’s a new PIP claim they are going to be very much more strict on the relevant documents. However when I put in my PIP claim I don’t remember them asking for these documents? Maybe make an appointment for yourself & your Son to attend your local Job centre. Just take in as much ID as possible & see if they can move things forward for you. Good luck!
