Can you eat expired chocolates?

I bought a few Roses tubs last Christmas. I discovered that one tub has an expiration date of Jan 31st. Can I still eat the chocolates? Will it give me tummy troubles?
Thanks.

Yes. They don’t rot 8 days later

FoxRedPuppy · 08/02/2026 22:46

It’s only a best before not an expiry date. I’d eat them!

LushLemonTart · 08/02/2026 22:47

No don't risk it 😉

It’s your duty to eat the poor buggers

PinkSkiesAtSunrise · 08/02/2026 22:48

They won’t do you any harm, they just might not taste as nice as when they were fresh.

Pinkgin00 · 08/02/2026 22:50

They'll be fine.

I was once gifted a box of chocolates that didn't look right, they had a white-ish tint and then when I checked the date, they were over a year old. A few weeks will be fine though, they are only best before.

Chocolate in my house never gets chance to go out of date 😆

BertieBotts · 08/02/2026 22:54

They will be fine unless they contain fresh cream (Roses don't).

If they are older they might develop "bloom" which is a white powdery coating that looks a little bit like mould, it's not mould though and is harmless, it's just the cocoa solids separating.

Anything with a BBE date is unlikely to be unsafe to eat unless it's years out of date. The main issue is the quality. So the texture/taste might be less nice than a fresh box. However considering it's only been 9 days I think it's likely they'll still be well within quality tolerance.

soupyspoon · 08/02/2026 22:55

Send them here and I will dispose of them safely for you

PGmicstand · 08/02/2026 23:01

No. You can send them to me and I will eat dispose of them safely.
This applies even more to dark chocolate.

LostMySocks · 08/02/2026 23:05

Chocolate has a best before date. It is legal to sell products after a BB date as it indicates that quality may deteriorate (texture or colour or taste may be less than optimum) but product is safe to eat.
You have to be more careful with use by dates. But even then for things like milk you can do a sniff test. Things like seafood or chicken on the other hand - you need to be more careful

JerryJacksonitsroughoutthereNsoul · 08/02/2026 23:11

They're crap tasting anyway I doubt you'll notice deteration in taste quality.
Get munching.👍

My OH knows I love them and told me it’s not good for me. He wants to throw the tub in the bin, but it's hidden. Since he WFH, I have to find ways to try to eat a few tomorrow. Testing time..😊

That's because there is absolutely nothing wrong with them

I'm surprised the chocolate was still enjoyable even though it was past its BBD.
Some foods can last longer than we think.
