DS seems ok, but says he’s got a ‘really bad’ headache and is hearing funny sounds.

He’s a bit behind speech wise so it’s not always too clear. But he says he got a really bad headache, says his brain is getting bigger in his head (assume feels like a pressure headache as that’s how I’d describe mine too!)

but he’s saying he can hear funny noises, he can’t explain what the noises are.

his temp is very slightly slightly elevated, it’s not over 38, he feels warm to touch and he seems ok in himself other than a bit tired (but it’s bedtime) and a little pesky in the face.

can kids get migraines? I’ve given him calpol but I think the hearing funny noises has thrown me off and made me worry😅

Ring 111. That would be a way too specific description for me to ignore.

BreakingBroken · 08/02/2026 19:38

Probably fluid in his ears and that can cause echoing crackling and throbbing type noises.
Book a GP appointment and while you wait treat with basic children’s medications and an extra pillow, warm packs also help drain the ears.

I think if he was mine I’d contact 111. Id rather be told I was overreacting than anything else! Bless him Sad. How old is he?

I'd call the out of hours doctor, just in case it is something that needs a doctor.

ChocHotolate · 08/02/2026 19:44

Can you give him a dose of calpol? If he’s got a headache it might help him

PlugUgly1980 · 08/02/2026 19:47

I’d assume tinnitus - ringing in the ears if mine said something like that, or crackling/popping which often happens with an ear infection or congested sinuses - but then I’ve suffered with my ears since I was a child, so it’s a common occurrence to me, and I know it gets worse when I’m coming down with something. If otherwise seemingly well (despite headache), I’d give calpol, put them to bed, check on them during the night and see how are they are in the morning.

Ilovelurchers · 08/02/2026 19:48

How old is he? (Sorry if i've missed this).

Definitely 111. I think I would want him seen, just because the symptoms are unusual.

(And yes, kids can get migraines).

Meanwhile give him Calpol, keep him calm and hydrated. If he is willing to eat probably give him something? And someone he is comfortable with should lie with him in a darkened room if that's possible.

What's your situation - do you have other kids? Another adult to hand? Can someone take him to an out of hours appointment if need be?

LIZS · 08/02/2026 19:58

How old is he? Might be an ear infection/glue ear or congestion.

mumoronegirl · 08/02/2026 20:01

Could be anything. If his head is worse lying down it could be idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) alyhought is very rare, especially in children and especially males.

mumoronegirl · 08/02/2026 20:02

Yea children get migraines

HattiesBag · 08/02/2026 20:03

My DS has had headaches since about age 3, any time he has a cold or virus. I assume it's a sinus / congestion thing? Usually worse at night when lying down.

JulietSierra · 08/02/2026 20:05

Not sure how old he is but I get the impression he’s quite little. For a little one to be describing the feeling of his brain getting bigger, I’d think he must really be in discomfort. I’d be seeking medical advice straight away. Hope he’s ok op.

stichguru · 08/02/2026 20:07

I would call 111 - sounds like an ear infection.

GhettoSnoopystar · 08/02/2026 20:10

I would call 111. It’s very probably minor, blocked sinuses or something, but it could also be something serious (and thankfully rare) like encephalitis.

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 08/02/2026 20:20

Could it be Covid? This was exactly what I experienced when I got Covid the first time. Worth doing a test?

TeenyWeenyPolkaDotPeeny · 09/02/2026 19:48

We ended up in A&E with suspected meningitis. Rang 111 at 11pm as DD woke with a severe headache and lights hurting his eyes so much he was clutching and burying his head. - told I would get a call back within an hour, didn’t get one until 4:30am to which they said straight to A&E as red flags for meningitis.

got to A&E, triaged within about 30 minutes, then waited a few hours to be seen by the doctor who started by telling me he’d been there all night and would hopefully see us soon because he wanted to go home 😅 ended up saying doesn’t think it’s meningitis and sent us home.
DS is doing better, still very warm and not himself but says his head doesn’t hurt anymore. No appetite but kinds of expected when they’ve got a fever.
