How to stop paying for my TV licence

caravantulips · 08/02/2026 06:55

I like the BBC and have never really begrudged my monthly direct debit but seeing the news that the licence fee is £180 this year it’s made me question it’s value as it’s only me who watches it.

I never watch BBC live (except for the news back in Covid times) but use iPlayer a lot. Should I just cancel the direct debit and delete the iPlayer app from my TV? Is this enough?

I do have the BBC news app on my phone and it’s my sole choice for news as it’s (supposed to be!!) impartial. Do you know if I can still use this? What about the videos on the BBC news channel?

You also need a TV licence to watch Amazon Prime.

Only if you watch live TV on it.

MrsBroccolini · 08/02/2026 09:50

If you use iPlayer you need to pay the licence.

How many years ago ?
Back in the day when you bought a new tv the place that sold it were obligated to tell the BBC
However that changed ( can't remember when)
Becsuse its perfectly possible to have a tv and just use it for streaming platforms ,you tube etc , and many do.

I dont have a tv not had one in years.

Why would you pay for a month? How would thr bbc know you're watching the live TV? They don't. It's a scam to make you scared and then you'll pay it. Even if they come to your house and see you have a tv (which I wouldn't let them do anyway) how can they possibly tell if you watch live TV?

I paid for a month over Christmas because my kids would be home and watching live TV

It's the law

I've no idea HOW the BBC can find out one way or the other. Perhaps through my IP address as we watch TV on laptops

But no matter if they can or can't find out, I pay because I watch

Respectfully, the fact that you are incredulous that I do this because you don't think the BBC could find out, says a great deal about you imo

Do you steal from M & S if you're pretty sure they can't find out ? 🙄

but i assume more people actually have a TV set now

You do, though. When I cancel my TV licence which they insist I do on the telephone, they ask if I have Netflix and if so, do I watch live TV through it

Wrong
Licence is for Live tv on any channel and iPlayer it is NOT for watching Netflix unless you can watch anything live on Netflix, I thought it was streaming only

They make it clear on their info page

SheilaFentiman · 08/02/2026 09:58

The fact that, on the same thread, the BBC is accused of being left wing and being a Farage supporter, probably means it is actually somewhere in the middle, where it should be. And at least it has a mission to be unbiased, even if it doesn’t always succeed.

If you use their content, you should pay the license. It’s technically possible to do a lot of illegal things eg driving without a license or valid MOT. But just because you can, doesn’t mean it’s ok.

The lovely BBC gentleman said that if I watch LIVE TV through Netflix I need a TV licence.

Do they still send threatening messages like Poundshop mafia to people without licences? I didn't have one for a few years - had no TV and didn't watch anything, it was pre smartphones and I didn't need one - and they sent me shitty letters all the time insinuating I was a criminal and they were going to get me. One actually had the line "Your address is high on my list". Making out that it was so scary that they knew I didn't have a licence, rather than just a simple process of elimination.

I ignored them and they never came round. I was hoping they would so they would look round, see I had no TV and feel like total twats. Arseholes.

They do. I've been under investigation for nine years and the investigation still hasn't discovered what my name is

CalzoneOnLegs · 08/02/2026 10:00

@MyNextDoorNeighbourVotesReform
Yes ANY LIVE TV but NOT streaming

you are confusing people saying they need one for Netflix

You DONT if if you only stream the content, like any of the providers

x2boys · 08/02/2026 10:01

EleanorReally · 08/02/2026 09:54

Quite possibly, but lots of people dont watch live TV they only watch catch up ,Netflix etc,and you tube
Its not illegal to own a tv and only use it for those purposes
It was 2013 BTW when Shops stopped being obliged to tell the BBC that somone had bought a new Tv and give them the person's details.

Yes

As I said in my post

Live TV through Netflix needs a TV licence

I didn't say that you need a TV licence to stream Netflix programmes

You don't need a TV licence to stream

We're both saying the same thing and have been saying the same thing all along

Because I used to pay for all of it - Sky Tv, Netflix, Amazon Prime etc and cost an absolute bomb! Then my brother-in-law suggested the firestick. Now we have everything we want to watch and it costs us £49 a year (well that’s what it cost last year.) I am proud of anything that I can do to save my family some money.

But it's illegal. How is breaking the law something to be proud of? I mean, shoplifting would save money, drug dealing is suppoyto be pretty lucrative ...

RoastBanana · 08/02/2026 10:03

For any government, getting the population to lap up propaganda and brain rotting trivia is an achievement. Getting the population to pay a monthly fee to lap it up, and to genuinely believe it is ‘independent’, is absolutely stunning & has to be admired.

Of course Netflix Prime Sky etc pump out propaganda and brain rotting crap too. It’s just that no one is gullible enough to describe them as independent, or a national treasure, or to be proud of them.

SheilaFentiman · 08/02/2026 10:05

Which examples of propaganda and which government? The current one, the prior one, the coalition?

CalzoneOnLegs · 08/02/2026 10:05

@MyNextDoorNeighbourVotesReform okay sorry must’ve the other poster i quoted but someone is confused.

HarryMaguireSlabHead · 08/02/2026 10:05

I stopped paying my TV licence when the BBC started telling me that men could become women

SheilaFentiman · 08/02/2026 10:05

What about that time the BBC awarded a man the title of women's footballer of the year?

Or when it put a man in its top 100 women list every year for a decade?

That's propaganda - and you're paying for it

They " find out" by a list of properties that exist and compare it to a list of properties that don't have a tv licence.

The old days with the TV detector vans? There was nothing in them, it's was just an elaborate hoax.

I begrudge paying the licence fee
repeats, buy this ‘book’ , adverts for more repeats, biased news reports

But you don’t begrudge paying for all the other biased news reporting? Interesting.

The PP specifically mentioned government propaganda.

So you think the Labour government, the Tory government and even the coalition government all directed the contents of women of the year lists?
