Listening to the soundtrack ahead of going to a film/musical

Do you listen to the soundtrack from musicals ahead of seeing them?

The first musical I saw was Matilda, I didn't have any idea what the songs were going to be before I went in and I loved every moment of it and the some of the songs really moved me. Then I've seen a few musical where obviously I've know most of the songs ahead of time because they were films long before they were musicals (like The Lion King and Frozen) and they were still thoroughly enjoyable. When I saw Wicked I'd vaguely heard of a few of the songs and I couldn't help but feel I'd have got a bit more from it if I'd known more of the songs/lyrics ahead of time.

We are going to see a new musical later this year and I'm not sure whether to listen to the soundtrack once or twice before we go, fully learn the lyrics of every song or go on blind! If I was seeing an artist in concert I'd probably pick one I knew well and could sing a long a bit too, but I don't think that's the done thing in the theatre. It is fun hearing a new song live for the first time too.

What would you do? Same question could apply to films but not many came to mind- I do usually just watch them without listening to the soundtrack first.

Thanks for the response. I think we will do that this time, although the whole soundtrack isn't out yet.

I'm glad I knew the Hamilton soundtrack before I saw it. It's sung through, and the wordplay is so fast and so good that I think you get more from it on a second listen.
