Magnesium supplement for teen for sleep support - recommendations?

Hi all, I wanted to try magnesium for my 13 year old, apparently it's good for encouraging sleep. Does anyone have a tried and tested brand and form they recommend (honestly lost with gummies, supplements, liquid, glycinate, citrate etc - so confusing!). If there's one that helped your child could you help? Is there a form that is better than others? thanks :)

I’m using nutrition geeks 3 in 1 magnesium and it’s been a complete game changer for everyone in the house and that’s only 2 weeks in.

Im going to post as although I cannot help regarding supplements, I have spent some time researching beds over the last year and can say with certainly that having a good bedroom is vitally important.

Do they have a good quality mattress, pillows and frame? Headboard? Is the room noisy?

I also use this but it’s labelled as not for use for people under the age of 18.

My kids are 19, 15 and 14 and I give them half the dose I have. Am sure it’s fine and I will definitely continue.

I use this but have no idea if suitable for all ages. Amazon.

It’s the glycinate type you need for relaxation and sleep.

Agree! These are the ones my husband and 12year old use. ( They are huge! If you can’t swallow them you can break them apart and add them to a drink)

I hadn't even thought about a half dose - thanks!
Sleep is an ongoing issue for DD.

I have tried loads of different ones and Ancient and Brave are by far the best. I ping out of bed the next morning when I take them.

I have these but it states on the packet not to be used by under 18’s?

My DD11 takes the novomins kid's night time gummies. They've really helped her.

+1 for nutrition geeks

gogogogogoog · 06/02/2026 20:41

thank you everyone! I was looking at the geeks ones wondering if they might be ok earlier... then wondering if they were too high. I might give them a go. the gummies also looked good because... well, appetising for a 13 year old!! going to look into all of these thank you all.

Would welcome your general experiences with magnesium for sleep for teens (or adults) and what a difference it's made for you? does anyone find it's helped with teens getting to sleep earlier? was it a pronounced difference for those who did? thank you! Flowers

yes, I think so - can't think of anything that would affect in this scheme of things. we are thinking maybe trying reading as audiobooks seem to keep her awake. wondering if neurodiversity (currently testing for it) is impacting it.

It's made a big difference to my DD. But it's also been coupled with a nightly yoga nidra meditation and some art therapy to work on what was causing the anxiety that was keeping her up in the first place, so I can't say it's 100% been the magnesium that's helped.

I have to say though, I do notice that she becomes more restless at night when she stops taking it and give her a nudge to start up again.
