I was reading on a topic i'm interested in and came across these two phrases/ They brought me up short, seeming out of place, so I wondered if others felt the same. Other text was missing, so I couldn't judge the context.

cultural contamination, behavioural divergence

Who would you think likely to use these, of whom?

I'll reveal who they are supposed to be from later.

You’re being very unclear. You were reading, happened upon two phrases that struck you, and which were somehow entirely devoid of context, and you want us to tell you who we think said them, and about whom? How could we possibly know?

canklesmctacotits · 06/02/2026 19:55

Cultural contamination: some racist fucker, anywhere really about anyone who’s different

Behavioural divergence: probably the same, about the same people

Could be a white supremacist, could be a religious fanatic, could be a populist nationalist. Basically, someone who doesn’t want “dilution”.

I mean how long is a piece of string?

PauliesWalnuts · 06/02/2026 20:00

I’m getting the name….Farage.

Cultural contamination definitely sounds racist. Not sure about the other one. Something about behavioural norms, definitely context dependant. Could be verging on the judgemental though.

Sidebeforeself · 06/02/2026 20:01

Seeming out of place? Were you reading ‘ We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” ?

Lifejigsaw · 06/02/2026 20:05

I mean it could be about anything! Cultural contamination, for example, could be about social media or AI, it could be about immigration or geopolitics, it could be about language change etc etc

maudelovesharold · 06/02/2026 20:16

Is it someone from the Danish Government/establishment, talking about Greenlanders? The USA taking over would be a disastrous outcome, but the Danes have hardly emerged covered in glory by their historic, and current, treatment the indigenous people of Greenland.

SnuggleReal · 06/02/2026 20:34

They could be used in a range of disciplines. Cultural contamination could possibly refer to a lack of objectivity in a situation or interpreting a situation due to seeing something through cultural lens (with an inability to see it through the lens of different cultural values and norms)? Behavioral divergence could be the same thing - diverging from the usual expectations due to different cultural norms? (Example, not making eye contact because it's considered impolite in some cultures, while polite in others. How it's perceived may be dependent on where you are.)

Or it could be racist, if spoken by someone on an anti-immigration topic. Or so many other things.

Can't evaluate the statements without context.

OK, I'll come clean. These were supposedly from Roman Senate documents found in the Vatican archives, but they sound like modern racisr politicians, or business speak. They are supposed to be from reports of the Ninth Legion, shortly before they disappeared. These suddenly turn up after centuries of 'nothing has been written anout them'. I would expect language more of the 'going native' kind, if that's what was being thought, It jars, and I don't buy it.
The argument is that Hadrian and the Senate deliberately sent them to be destroyed. Hence the massive cover-up.
But the Vatican? Is this by Dan Brown?
