Here are a few of mine:

  • Teapots. I don’t use them often but when I have guests I love cracking it out.
  • Bed trays. I don’t have one but I always think about how nice it would be to have breakfast in bed on one when they’re in period dramas.
  • Having milk delivered to your front door. It’s so much more expensive than the supermarket so I can’t justify doing it much but it makes me feel nostalgic.
  • Homemade cake. It’s so nice to have homemade when shop bought is much easier.
  • Buying eggs from an ‘honesty box’. Even better if it’s in a quaint village with cute cottages.

It seems a lot of mine revolve around food.

Getting honey from the bee man down the road who has hives.

Poor bloke - is he taking anything for it? Grin

I too have a stationery problem ....

I use fountain pens with ink converter never a cartridge plus lovely "gel" pens with refills from papersmiths and lumps /wren from Toms Studio. Also paper and beautifiul note cards, washi tape, lovely leather pencil cases.

Wrapping paper, ribbons of all colours , tissue paper for pre wrapping.

I do use tissues but also have a stack of hankies. Teapot and lovely cups and saucers. I live in the country and like getting the eggs from the local honesty box often in the summer they have bunches of sweet peas too.

I'm sure there is a lot else ...

BeaLola · 04/02/2026 21:50

I've thought of another - a powder compact for touch ups, a perfume atomiser to decant small amounts into from large bottles

YorkshireIndie · 04/02/2026 21:51

We have milk in glass bottles delivered. Better for the environment and the farmers as it is done all on site

Linen table cloths and napkins along with the correct types of cutlery (eg soup spoons and fish knives) for the type of food you're going to eat. A cruet set on the table and wine decanted into a cut glass decanter.

Love this!!

Jojoanna · 04/02/2026 21:51

Milkman comes early morning , bread man , going to the local shops and somebody delivers it just as you get home , landline and lots of different shops to browse round , I know you can have most of these but it seemed so much more gentle when I was young .

Fountain pens. I use them for everything I write on paper, including meeting notes at work, shopping lists etc. I also fill them from ink bottles instead of using cartridges.

I also use vintage glasses for drinks and have the correct style of glass for pretty much every drink, including cocktails.

Also, although I don’t use them myself, I love the fact that my DP uses cotton handkerchiefs instead of tissues and has a fresh one in his pocket every day.

When DS was little he had a habit of shredding a tissue in his pocket so I started giving him a clean white cloth hanky every day. His teacher mentioned that she thought it looked so nice!

ThePerfectWeekender · 04/02/2026 21:52

Just finished writing a letter to DD, who is at university. I speak to her several times a week, but at least once a month I send her a letter. She loves it and has now started writing to her aunts and a couple of friends.
I get my eggs from an honesty box and regularly bake a cake.

I use a fountain pen. How does your DH wash the hankies? My mum used to boil them in a saucepan.

ChurchWindows · 04/02/2026 21:52

I have a pantry that I stock with my home made chutneys, jams and marmalade. I also have a tea pot, wear an apron, use a paper diary and carry wicker baskets to the shop.

I love listening to the church bells and seeing the lights shining through the stained glass (next to my cottage) on winter evenings.

My best friend says I am a Victorian.

@ASometimeThing keep a coolbox outside my door and put a freezer block in it before bed on summer nights. My milkman puts the bottles in there so they're still cold until the morning.

Where I grew up no one locked doors unless someone had escaped from Dartmoor prison. However if they got to us from Dartmoor I was told they were exhausted.
A neighbour who found one in her shed said that he was relieved to be caught.

I don’t lock my door where I live now 😳

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 04/02/2026 21:55

I've found my people!
I write letters in fountain pen and send thank you notes. I have a linen table cloth on the kitchen table for every day, it always has fresh flowers from the garden (even if it is a tiny bunch of snowdrops like now).

I bake our bread and cook as much as I can from foraged or home grown things. I live in the countryside so it's easier but I did used to do it in the centre of a city as well, you just have to know where to look.

I cook game birds or venison from the local shoot. Again, everyone does that around here but I got some funny looks from my flatmates when I was younger when I was stripping a brace of pheasants in our shared kitchen!

I have been lucky enough to inherit various bits of silver cutlery and other bits which I do polish. It brings me so much joy.

I had a Fitbit for a while but much prefer my very ancient proper watch.
I love beautiful clothes made from natural fabrics and a proper hand bag
My daughter calls me The Victorian.

But weirdly I love dance music and have been known to go to a rave in gingham dress with a mulberry handbag!

Sending postcards from holiday.

Fingalscave · 04/02/2026 21:56

As so many other posters have said, my fountain pen and writing pad.
My china tea set- matching cups, saucers, teapot, sugar bowl, milk jug and side plates.
Cake forks.
My charm bracelet with charms from when I got it, aged 11, up to the present day.

ThejustbrothersCarlenaNSoul · 04/02/2026 21:57

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 04/02/2026 21:59

Oh god yes, proper tea in a tea pot! I hate tea bags, leaves taste so much better, are much easier to compost and are much better for the environment.

justtheotheronemrswembley · 04/02/2026 21:59

We buy our eggs from a stall outside someone's house up the road.

Every year when we go on holiday I buy a souvenir teatowel just like my DM used to, and I have quite a few of them now. Makes wiping up slightly less of a chore.

I love this! Please can I come to yours for (several) cocktails!

ChurchWindows · 04/02/2026 22:00

@Orangesarenottheonlyfruit When we were first married DH used to shoot pheasants and rabbits for the pot to help us make ends meet. Our cottage was so tiny and cold we used to hang them in the downstairs shower. We had to warn visitors about them before they went in to use the loo.

ThejustbrothersCarlenaNSoul · 04/02/2026 22:04

@Orangesarenottheonlyfruit noticed your username is it from a TV series about a young girl called Jess who had strict religious parents?

ThePerfectWeekender · 04/02/2026 22:04

Also...I don't drink tea, but have several teapots because I collect Cornishware.
My door is rarely locked either.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 04/02/2026 22:06

@ChurchWindows that's hilarious!

We have an outside shed and the local gamekeeper just comes and hangs them off the wine rack, sometimes he doesn't even tell me they're there. It can be quite a shock if you're just nipping out for a bottle of plonk!

petitpasta · 04/02/2026 22:06

Milk delivery 5 days a week here. Milkman also delivers eggs and bread. I used to have a cool box outside the door but someone nicked it. From the doorbell footage it was a woman who took it at 3am. I tell myself she may have taken it for her kid's breakfast 😥.

DH uses cotton handkerchiefs. He also likes jigsaws which always feel from a different era.

We both have a vintage crystal glass on our bedside table. Have to hand wash them but it's worth it.

Use soup spoons, fish knives, cheese knives, butter knives and steak knives regularly. And grapefruit spoons! Use a toast rack if we have time at the weekend. Also make proper porridge on the hob which seems old fashioned to friends.

I have a cake stand which I use if I bake anything. And I have a collection of aprons.

I iron my teatowels as I like how they look and feel.

Make proper cocoa a few nights a week.
