What do you do with old family photos?

I mean, literally two trunks full of my grandparents photos my parents photos my own family photos

I intend to gradually go through them and get rid of the thousands of photos of zoo animals and the like🤦🏼‍♀️🫠

I have always been a sentimental holder, however as the last couple of years I’ve become a lot more pragmatic mostly due to having had to clear out to separate parental homes following their deaths😢

But I have ended up with every single family photo that we found and I’m struggling to know what to do.

Obviously, I want to keep some of them and I will ask my aunt and Uncle from each side if they want any of their parents photos but I strongly assume they will already have some.

It just feels so wrong to dispose of them, but my own children probably won’t feel the same and they will end up just being disposed of at some point anyway!

i’m having a real moral dilemma over this! Probably because I love looking at old photos And the incredible memories they hold not only for me, but the amount I’ve ended up with is just unbelievable and I literally have nowhere to put them. They are currently in storage unit that I am trying to empty to save money on paying for it.

I threw most of them away
my parents never looked at photos
our kids won’t
I don’t want to leave more than necessary for them

once they are gone it’s done

I kept a handful of good ones

This. Am in the process of sorting through thousands of photos that were inherited by my parents, their photos because they died after that and my own photos so my children never have to deal with the same thing. I find it quite painful but ones it's done I think I will feel freer.

I am doing the same with possessions after that 😅

I think doing this for your parent once they are gone encourages you to do the same with your own possession’s. I know I am starting to look at my own as I sort my parents things.

You could donate some of them to local history museums

They are not English photos and there is no local group in that area.

I offered them to the rest of my family and the ones left were binned.

one Of my hobbies is scrapbook memory albums. I’m the same I’ve inherited loads from my parents, my in-laws and our photos of our family, far too many to keep. I’m gradually sorting the photos and throwing the scenery, animal and doubled up or not interesting photos and am making acid and linguine free albums for my son who will then eventually pass on to his son in years to come. I thoroughly enjoy doing these pages scattered with embellishments and writing the little I know about who the people are and where and when the photo was taken. I purchase acid and linguine free albums etc from craft shops as this then will stop the photos etc turning yellow for the next 100 years. My son & grandson love sitting and looking through my albums looking and reading about their past ancestors. In 50/60 years to come when I’m no longer around and they are both older with grandchildren themselves I’d like to think their children would find their family history fascinating. I’ve also had some slides my father took when I was a child put on CD discs as with mobile phones etc I think the art of having photographs printed will fade away.
