Surgery - how to reduce scars

Primrose76 · 04/02/2026 00:02

Traumatic 2 weeks in hospital with emergency surgery. Now have 3 devent sized keyhole wound sites and a big hole in my side from a drain that was in for 5 days. Is there anything I can do or buy to reduce scarring? Aware my stomach will be scarred forever but if theres anything that will help it not look as bad. Thank you

Silicone tape is supposed to be good.

Bio oil and moisturise daily after you shower.

I give my c-section scars a 'massage' daily with body moisturiser and they are barely noticeable now.

Bio Oil

I had 2 ginormous babies as a size 8-10 woman, used BioOil every day and don’t have a single stretch mark

Vitamin E. Get the liquid capsules and instead of swallowing them, open them over the scars and rub the oil over.

Silicone tape is better than anything else I tried.

it does fail to live to its claims in some ways.

  1. It doesn’t stick all that well so often needs something to hold it on.
  2. it is supposed to be reusable, it is not. It will have far too much residue and washing it rigorously enough just makes it ball up.

however, even with those flaws, it is worth the money. I have stopped keloids in their tracks and now have tiny lines that are barely visible. I have far too many surgeries and procedures and my fragile skin wants to create big ugly, often painful scars. I swear by this stuff.

Massage! Vitamin E cream is good, keep massaging every day.

I had an op 6 months ago. I used silicone tape - it definitely helped. Once it was healed over, I peeled it back and massaged in vitamin c cream (could use bio oil also) a few times a day.

My scar was initially very lumpy and bumpy due to fluid and scar tissue. It is very smooth now and improving continually - still quite itchy as the scar heals more and more.

Silicone tape, I used Kelinul, it reduced a lumpy 5 inch scar on my neck to an almost invisible line. I used it daily for about four months and had half the roll left, so worth the money. Unlike pp Ponderingwindow, I found it stuck well and was reusable for about a week without needing any other method of keeping it in place, but I imagine that might depend on where the scar is sited, especially if under clothing. Would certainly recommend.

Thank you. Which brand of silicone tape did you use please? There's so many online

The plastic surgeon who removed a skin lesion (benign thankfully) for me told me it was the massage that was the important thing and to use Nivea, the sort in a blue pot, and save money. Bio-oil not necessary.
