What do I have to know about glaucoma eye drops

What happens when certain eye drops make your eyes stinging and red...and the other ones don't make improvement on your eye pressure? Is it surgery the immediate answer or not?

I had pleasant ones that didn’t work and was then moved onto the stinging ones. I put up with the stinging (only lasts a second) because they REALLY work. My advice is to keep the drops beside your bed. I put them in, one drop in each eye, absolutely last thing before I go to sleep. The pressure in my eyes has dropped right down to a totally normal level. I also have freakishly long eyelashes!

Hi, Do you put them each night or in the morning also?
Do your eyes get red in daytime and stinging all the time?

Exactly what @MetaphorsBeWithYou said. The stinging is soon over and it reassures me that the drops have actually gone in. And when the pressures have gone down to within normal levels it really is worth the discomfort. And I'm an absolute baby about anything to do with eyes!

The gorgeous eyelashes were an unexpected bonus.

Which drops are you using? Have you had SLT which is now the first intervention? If you have a number for a nurse at the clinic you could phone and ask for advice. Or try the Glaucoma charity helpline.

Ultimately if eye pressures aren't low enough with drops and/or SLT then you may end up having surgery.

I don't know what is SLT ...I used Latanoprost and now Srimbrinza
Latanoprost did not work and the Srimbrinza make my eyes read and stinging all day long

I would get back in touch your ophthalmology team and ask for a review as it sounds as though the drops are unsuitable. I would also enquire about SLT- Selective laser trabeculoplasty. I had it as an outpatient and it has reduced my pressures to normal ranges (although I only have ocular hypertension and not glaucoma). It may be that the procedure could reduce it enough to not warrant the drops but in the interim there are other eye drops for glaucoma so it is worth a discussion to find some that don't leave your eyes red and stinging for a prolonged period.

You may need to use anti irritant eye drops. You may find preservative free eye drops more comfortable. You may need a different type of active ingredient. Maybe SLT is an option that would work for you and need fewer or no drops. It's a bit of trial and error to find the right solution so do contact your hospital clinic.

I've had six surgeries and use four different eye drops every day. My eyes and the surrounding area of skin are red. I cover up during the day with foundations and eyeshadow. The alternative is blindness. My pressures however are down to 12 and 13.

I loved DH's beautiful eyelashes 😍

All gone now as the meds didn't work for him.

The sting reassured him the drops had gone in. But all day long is too much, you need to contact your eye clinic.

My top tip is to stay on top of your appointments- if they say 4 months make sure it doesn't drag to 8. And you can always get your pressure checked at the optician in between appointments.

Dh prefers the drops in the am, uses plain moisturizing drops throughout the day for discomfort.
Had SLT early on and now normal pressure.
