My Df is being investigated for cancer. He has NO appetite at the minute and we’re really struggling to get calories in - he is refusing anything thickened so shakes etc are out, any ideas for a thin liquid!? He’s surviving on consommé at the moment!!

Cream? Bit heavy though
Creamy consomme?

Talipesmum · 03/02/2026 11:33

Add double cream to the consommé. It’s highly calorific - my mum had similar recently needing to build up weight.

PeeledOranges · 03/02/2026 11:33

Ask the GP to prescribe something like Ensure - it comes in various thick and thin liquids and they do a dessert range too.

What about a whey isolate?
Like this

might be abit far fetched but it’s not like a protein shake it’s more watery like a juice and they do different flavours and you can buy samples online too

Yutaka Miso Soup 90g (5x18g) | Sainsbury's (fish the seaweed out - there are only a few leaves)

Talipesmum · 03/02/2026 11:35

It doesn’t need much - one of those small 150ml pots is 700 calories. Add little bits to the consommé taken throughout the day.

Silverbirchleaf · 03/02/2026 11:35

Huel meal replacement drinks

lucozade

fruit juice

Aymes soup

Idontspeakgermansorry · 03/02/2026 11:35

Add olive oil or butter the soup.
Whole milk. Maybe with nesquick?
Hot chocolate with cream.
Flat coke.

Fortsip (or similar) are the calorie drinks generally prescribed for this sort of situation. They taste a bit nasty though. Much better if they’re chilled. They’re kind of “baileys” thickness.

BashfulClam · 03/02/2026 11:42

Protein works do a clear protein that is more like a juice. I like the lemonade one as I don’t like thick drinks.

See the GP as the can prescribe high calorie juices and when my Dad was ill they gave us a powder to help him get calories. It’s tasteless and you add it to meals and drinks. 200 calories a scoop if i remember correctly.

TheCurious0range · 03/02/2026 11:44

Clear whey protein , not high calorie but will get protein and vitamins etc into him, same consistency as ribena/squash. They sell it in Tesco the Myprotein one is pleasant.

OrlandointheWilderness · 03/02/2026 11:47

Really, really appreciate all this guys. Thank you so much.

Someone else mentioned Ensure. That's recommended by NHS

I know you asked about liquids but also look at other foods anything he likes right now. Being healthy goes out of the window. Anything with calories. Usually sweet things as that's one of the last tastes to go. Toast with honey. Porridge with honey or sugar. Pudding with custard. Sweets. Baked Beans.

oscilla · 03/02/2026 12:06

Water down the thick stuff to the consistency he will drink.

Dolphinnoises · 03/02/2026 12:09

Have you tried ice cream? When my Dad came out of ICU it was all he could tolerate

I think miso soup is very low in calories.

Absolutely this. There are so many types the GP can prescribe Ensure,Fresubin,Aymes etc. Please speak to his GP. They normally come in small bottles (about 200ml) but contain 350-400 calories so they certainly get the calories in. Also they have the required balance of vitamins, minerals etc.

FoamShrimps · 03/02/2026 12:14

The clear protein from my protein is really tolerable

sashh · 03/02/2026 12:19

Peanut butter, it can be watered down in to a drink.

Bovril isn't high in calories but does have protein.

I'm being investigated for similar but my appetite seems to have returned somewhat. But some days I would crave just one thing, one day I had 3 pickled onions. Nothing else all day.

I shouldn't recommend alcohol, but it does have empty calories. Can he tolerate fizzy drinks? Lots of calories in some of them.

Tea / coffee with extra sugar.

When I had cancer I became lactose intolerant so couldn't handle the meal replacement shakes (plus was too sick to stomach most things). I tried lots of different things on prescription from the GP/dietician and the best was Altra juice. It tastes just like a fruit juice and is very thin. You should get them prescribed by the GP but most pharmacies have to order them in so if you can't wait they sell them on amazon

Altrajuice

Full fat coke/other fizzy

wishingonastar101 · 03/02/2026 12:34

Freja broth is lovely... I drank a lot of it when I was sick. Not sure it's got many calories but has lots of nutrients.

alovelypatternedcarpet · 03/02/2026 12:39

Bone broth - you can get beef, chicken and even fish versions if any of those would work. Or as a PP says, whatever he'll consider eating is good enough in the circumstances, so if a packet of jaffa cakes appeals to him, that'll do!
