Where are you doing your online food shop?

For context, we usually do an Ocado shop, but I have found that I’m just getting bored of it, more and more items out of stock when you check out and terrible dates on meat, which is a shame cause a few months ago we had none of these problems.

which food shop have you found to be decent when shopping online.

also - we live rural so driving to do a shop is out of the question, there is literally
no time 🤣

Morrisons. Gave up on Asda as the substitutions were dreadful (cho plate cake for a bag of bread flour??) and the final straw was when they cancelled my delivery 10 minutes before it was due and took 7 days to get the money back!

Morrisons are sensible with subs, comes bagged up and the drivers are great.

Those of you who shop at Ocado, what's the own brand stuff like?

I mostly use Sainsbury's - but the substitutions can be annoying. I collect the points and use them for my Christmas shop.

For a treat or if I'm cooking for a special occasion, I use Waitrose - the food is lovely, there's never any substitutions and the delivery man carries it all inside for me.

Our local Sainsburys seems to have a knack of scheduling shelf-stackers AFTER I visit so I rarely attempt to buy food there.

Maybe I've not been paying attention, but I don't think the Ocado own-range is vast (but I seem to remember they upped the range after splitting with Waitrose). I tend to buy Ocado (fresh and frozen) veg and salad bags. Fruit is probably 50:50 Ocado vs M&S. It seems like Waitrose Essentials standard to me, ditto their block butter and wholemeal pasta. We tend to buy Mutti tomatoes and Italian brands white pasta. We can't tell the difference between Italian M&S vs Ocado coffee beans.

There are usually quite a few multi-buy offers (BOGOF, or 3 for the price of 4 etc) so I have no great brand loyalty for cleaning products or mince. I tend to buy branded chickens and meat joints.

I seem to remember that there are some hefty discounts for the first few orders.

Again it might be a SW thing, but the drivers usually ring to ask if they can deliver early if in the area, or to apologise if running late. I also get a phone alert when I am the next stop AND when they are unloading. It just works for us.

We have been using Tesco for ages. Rarely have an issue with produce, choice, dates, or substitutions. One poster mentioned that they have dirty trays.....tbh...Ours are always clean and the delivery guys are great. Ive been seeing the same guys for years, so they must be happy in their work.

MapleSyrupOnToas · 03/02/2026 14:42

Tesco have always been good for me. Sainsbury were also OK, just not as good delivery slots as Tesco.

FurForksSake · 03/02/2026 14:46

Ocado here, dates excellent, nothing out of stock and I love a flash sale bargain.

Somelne asked about own brands, I’d say a huge amount of my shop is Ocado own brand and it’s really good. Their baked beans are nice, that’s often a benchmark.

Ocado but like others I think that it has gone downhill a bit. Regular substitutions. Often late. And sometimes packaging is damaged.

Same . Been using ocado for 3 years. No issues until recently. Lots of subs and late every week or very early and the dates are rubbish. It's only been the past few months but it's very disappointing

anonlawyer · 03/02/2026 14:47

Ocado but the pricing is a bit weird of late.

longtompot · 03/02/2026 16:01

Sainsburys. Mine is picked in store so can be missing a few items. I've just had a look at Morrisons & Ocado and they have a much better low/no alcohol range, and I know Ocado already has a better dairy free range, though not sure of their gluten free, so I might be going over to one of them sooner than later

I've been with Ocado for years and years. Hopefully it will start to improve again. I'm fed up of having to report that the yogurts have split again and gone over everything in that particular shopping bag.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 03/02/2026 16:24

Sainsbury’s xx

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 03/02/2026 18:42

Ocado, rarely have anything out of stock or a sub, but I order a few days in advance. Top up with local independent butcher, greengrocer, Baker.

Fatmumslim01 · 03/02/2026 18:47

Another vote for ocado, been with them for years. Yes they are not the cheapest but it's worth it for the convenience and reliability.
Hardly any subs, I often get a price match voucher, flash sales are good, delivery always on time and friendly drivers, and bags which is a massive plus.

@chrppelroan when I've had short dates I've just requested a refund easily

unsync · 03/02/2026 18:48

Ocado and if I need meat, I go to my local farm shop. @HelenHywater I find their own brand stuff is perfectly acceptable, especially fruit and veg, and all the other basic stuff - dairy, detergent, cleaning materials etc. They also price check Tesco so you get a money off coupon too if it is more expensive.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 03/02/2026 18:50

Ocado, dates are always fine, only had about 3 substitutions all year last year, with a weekly delivery.

RandomUsernameHere · 03/02/2026 18:53

Tesco, everything is pretty much always available, there are rarely substitutions.

reservoirdawg · 03/02/2026 18:58

Started in covid with Ocado as they always had slots. The change to M&S was fine and they were always on time, friendly delivery etc.
Then a few months back decided with trying Tesco. To two addresses and amazing. Clubcard points and prices, much cheaper than Ocado and in London, Whoosh. £2.99 for within the hour delivery.

mondaytosunday · 03/02/2026 18:58

Tesco. Occasionally Waitrose or Sainsbury’s. Very rarely Ocado.
Tesco has the most variety and I am just familiar with the foods so it’s easy. Waitrose as they have some things particular to them.
I go to Lidl for the bakery section, cheaper pet food and wine, and the Raku range of salads.

DinoLil · 03/02/2026 19:15

No Ocado where I live, but I'm a supermarket floozy and order from Morrisons, Iceland, Sainsburys, Asda and Tesco. All home delivery. I just look for the best bargains.

OffToSeaInABlizzard · 03/02/2026 19:15

We have Whoosh in Oxford … (I haven’t used it but have been at a friend’s house when she whooshed some emergency prawns.)

If I’m very desperate for crisps and tonic water I order from Waitrose on Deliveroo.

Hardlyhardyhardy · 03/02/2026 19:17

Ocado. I’ve tried Sainsbury’s and Tesco but Ocado is easily the best.

Greenwriter76 · 03/02/2026 19:19

Recently started online shopping and I use Tesco (it’s 5 mins down road from us). No subs yet, always on time and I’ve been happy with the fresh stuff.
I do it a few days in advance and can edit the order until late on the day before delivery. Delivery saver slots are good, half the price of the standard slots but with a slightly wider time frame.

Growlybear83 · 03/02/2026 19:26

I’ve had a weekly reserved shop with ocado for over 20 years but I’ve tended to buy a bit less from Ocado and more from Waitrose recently as there is a big branch of Waitrose on my way home from the swimming pool I use three times a week. I enjoy strolling round a nice supermarket, although it’s rare thst I’ve had problems with substitutions and missing items with Ocado. I was very irritated when they stopped selling Waitrose food and moved to M&S, so I’ve got a nice mix of the two at the moment.

TheDogsMother · 03/02/2026 19:46

Used to be Waitrose but when I couldn’t get slots during Covid I moved to Sainsburys. I did have a brief dabble with Ocado but didn’t like that the shop needed to be completed by 17.00 the day before delivery whereas it’s 23.00. With Sainsburys. They have a good range, fruit and veg is mostly ok, substitutions are rare and they are always on time.

ParmaViolletts · 03/02/2026 19:49

I didn't mind the move to m and s I think me and s do many things better than. Waitiese.

I was always very pleased with ocado ,very few subs I really liked the reductions on there which you can't get on other delivery services literally an on line yellow sticker service.

However I had an issue with them before Xmas in my pass renewal and I didn't like the new email system . I wasn't happy with the customer service over my pass and twice I asked them to look into something else and get a manager to contact me.

No contact so I switched to Waitrose.

Please be aware on ocado if there is offer eg three meat products for ten quid ..if it doesn't go In the basket at a certain process you won't get the offer.

Eg maybe put two in and one later or add all three then change one.

I always assumed the offers were just honoured.

Hazlenuts2016 · 03/02/2026 19:57

Tesco. Good deliveries so far over last few years and delivery saver plan saves me a lot.
