Very odd pain!

Last night I was driving home, and suddenly I got a dull, pulsating ache in the lower left side of my back, kind of in my hip. It got more and more painful until it was more of a deep stabbing pain, it would come in waves and it felt almost like a pulsation or throbbing pain. It would do a few throbs at a more dull, less painful level, and then randomly do one or two stabbing pains, painful enough to make me groan out loud. This continued for around 4hours until I fell asleep! I woke up this morning and it didn’t hurt anymore.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I told myself if it still hurt this morning then I would take myself to A&E, but now that it’s stopped, I’m just left feeling confused Confused

It’s impossible to say, as it could be one of many things and it would be irresponsible for posters to guess, but if it happens again see your GP asap!

I don’t see how it could be irresponsible? I have been looking it up and it is all saying kidney stones/kidney infections, however I haven’t had any issues with urinating and no more pain today!

I meant it would be irresponsible for posted to suggest various conditions which might worry you, but you’ve probably done that by consulting Dr Google!

When was your last period?

This could be an ectopic pregnancy. You sometimes get a negative pregnancy test in an ectopic.

(In any case, the tests the NHS use aren't very sensitive. Nowhere near as good as the ones in the shops)

I'm going to suggest trapped wind (that you've let go of in your sleep).

Yes, it really can be that painful.

That would be my guess. I’ve woken in the night with that, convinced I’m going to die with the pain. Passing wind sorts it!

Kidney stones can cause the pain you describe OP. They can lay dormant for years, then move, then lay dormant again. The pain is when they move. I’ve had them, as have close family members. Do you live in a hard water area? We do, consultant told us to never drink tap water, but to filter it, and mix it with fresh lemon juice at least once a day. The lemon dissolves the stones.

Shingles?
