DH had a bout of pancreatitis last August. Was in hospital a few days. He was asked if he was a big drinker but he’s not, just has the odd beer on weekends. The weekend before we’d attended a BBQ and he’s had a few more than usual over the afternoon.
He told the doctor this and thought no more of it, had an ultrasound and no gallstones found. His discharge notes say ‘no cause for admission found on CT but could be due to slightly increased alcohol intake a few days before’.
Hes been perfectly well since with no issues at all (he hasn’t had anything to drink since).
We’re looking to book travel insurance now and one of the questions is about a hospital visit so we’re adding it on but a further question is what is the cause of the pancreatitis. One of the answers is alcohol. If I tick that option the cost is £3300!
If I don’t tick it (none of the above) it’s a more manageable £350.
I don’t know what to do, the notes don’t definitely say that it was caused by alcohol but that it could be.
I would hate to travel and then him have to claim for another issue then they see this and decide not to pay out. It would be unlikely for him to have another pancreatitis attack s he doesn’t drink but he could need treatment for another issue and perhaps the dread the discharge notes and try and wriggle out of paying?
Any idea what we should do? If the notes say ‘could have been caused’ would that be a reason for them to decline?
