Can I get a sense check: 5 month olds sleep

Hi I’m a first time mum. Apologies if this is a silly question…My little girl is 5 months and 1 week.

She has 3 naps a day no issue and she will go to bed/sleep from 8:30pm-6:30am with no night feeds, and if she wakes and fusses we just pop her dummy back in.

She will tend to wake up around 5:30 ish fuss and then tends to sleep until 6:30 - either she’s happy in her bassinet or she falls back to sleep for that last hour.

I’m interested to know if her sleep seems average? The norm? Ideally I’d love her to sleep until 7am (wishful thinking!) As she gets older will she sleep for longer or is her sleep good for her age?

I know every baby is different by I have nothing to compare it to.

thank you x

Thank your lucky stars she sleeps as well as she does. Do not change a thing!

Signed, mum of two who didn't sleep through until at least 1yo.

This! I’ve had great sleepers and a terrible one. They are all different and that’s normal.

Her sleep sounds like a dream tbh. I have an early riser who still wakes at 5am-5.30 age 10.

Sounds amazing. Mine only slept for about an hour at a time!

Grammarninja · 31/01/2026 13:13

You are living the dream! 2 year old here who still wakes up 3 times a night and takes no naps.

PutTheScrewInTheTuna · 31/01/2026 13:16

I have a just turned 5 month old (our 3rd dc) and I think she is a really good sleeper but nowhere near as good as your dc. She only has short contact naps during the day and will sleep from 11pm- 6am with one quick dream feed during that time. But that’s much better than dc2 and I get a chunk of sleep so I’m so happy with that.
Please count your lucky stars 😂
Our dc1 was always a fantastic sleeper but dc2 who is 3 still wakes us up at 5.30am every morning, and as a baby would wake up every hour throughout the night until they were 2. It was torture.
In your current shoes I would be over the moon with their sleep pattern and not change a thing!

Thank you. Ok this is good to know. I honestly am clueless and it’s very much down to pot luck x

Hi everyone thank you for the positive feedback. Ok so I didn’t realise how lucky I am! I’ve been over thinking it.
It’s definitely down to luck and absolutely nothing we’re doing. I do think exclusively formula feeding may have helped though.
seems like rather than over think it I should be grateful!

That sounds like amazing sleep to me. It might get worse when she teethes, and then again around 13 months.
from a mum who’s child slept through for the first time when they were 6.

My god Im insanely jealous. You have a unicorn baby. Hope it doesn’t change (but be prepared it probably will).

Peonies12 · 31/01/2026 14:27

And there’s no evidence formula babies wake less, please don’t give that as advice to BF mums (as I have been told, and I found it upsetting).

ADHDFocusedLife · 31/01/2026 14:30

Your baby’s sleep sounds great for her age! At 5 months, 10 hours of night sleep is normal, and 3 naps a day is typical. Early wake-ups around 5:30am are common and might extend as she gets older. Most babies start sleeping longer in the mornings by 6-9 months, so don’t worry her sleep is on track!

I wasn’t giving advice about formula feeding just saying that for my baby there was a correlation when I went to exclusively formula feeding she slept through the night. I just mentioned it because it was my observation. I Can’t see how this can upset breastfeeding mums but sorry if you didn’t like what I said

Years ago when my DC wasn't sleeping through the night, the HV suggested a formula feed for the last feed before bedtime as she said it kept them going slightly longer than a breastfeed would.

It definitely worked and we carried on breastfeeding with f/f for the bedtime feed.

NuffSaidSam · 31/01/2026 19:50

That's great sleep, you're very lucky.

Be prepared that it might not last!

Enjoy every uninterrupted night that you have.

Yes, we did this from day one so I don’t know if it helped but my breastfeeding journey was pretty traumatic and my milk never came in (medical reason).
My little girl from week 1-8 had 75% formula with the rest a top up of my breast milk.
Finally when I couldn’t get my milk in I went exclusively formula from week 8-9ish and she started to sleep 7+ hrs stretches x

Oh I am aware! 😬 I figure even if it goes to shit I’ve had a blessed few months, more so than most.

she had her 4 month developmental leap which messed up her sleep for a few weeks but it was manageable and didn’t last longer than 2 weeks.

its all down to luck

Nobody can answer your questions as so much affects baby sleep. Just enjoy it while you can - the sleep and the time with your partner.

DD could do 6 hours at that age (despite being breastfed!) but sleep has been a huge struggle since she turned 6 months old. It’s tough!
