How often do you buy homeware type stuff?

I have been making a budget for the next few months as we've some expensive work coming up. Looking at bank statements, I can see I buy stuff for the house regularly, a plant, cushions, bedding or a candle. It's not overly expensive stuff but adding it up, I do spend a lot. I just wondered if this is common. I can be at Tesco then buy a photo frame or a chopping board, sometimes it's a planned purchase. I replace towels if add to bedding when needed, sometimes buy a new casserole dish.

I don't follow trends and only redecorate if needed. I dont add to landfill unnecessary either by buying stuff and getting rid after a while.

What are others like?

Not much any more as it's mostly clutter. I understand why older people have houses full of Stuff! I do replace stuff that has worn out. There's a beautiful table lamp I want ( meikiedesigns.com/collections/limited-edition-art-lamps/products/trees-contemporary-floor-lamp-1m-tube-beautiful-art-lamp-cathedral-tall-light ) but not until I've redecorated and cleared some clutter.

I buy bits and bobs, more over the last year as bought my first home (although am mid 40s so already have a lot of stuff) I have a lot of house plants, use candles regularly and like a new duvet cover now and again. I don't follow trends or buy seasonal stuff but am ok with picking up the odd thing like a new picture frame for a print or a new mug or whatever.

Recently, loads. We’ve just redecorated our very large living room and in the last two months have bought two sofas, two lamps, a coffee table, throws, cushions, a rug, a side table etc. I’m. Off out now to buy a large house plant and container. We also pimped our guest room this month so I’ve brought new linen bedding, a lamp, a bedside table and a duvet etc.

I can go months without buying anything new for the house, and tend to work on a room as a project so things work together.

I also love buying things for the house when on holiday and try always to bring something special home from our travels (my favourites are a handmade mask from British Columbia and a gorgeous lithograph from Zambia.)

Out of interest, where does everyone buy homewares from?

I already posted up thread that we are renovating and have moved from a flat to a much larger house- so will need to go shopping soon for things. 😄

I hardly ever buy the things you describe, unless I’m replacing something broken or have redecorated and changed colour scheme. I look after my things and recently mentioned to DH that the colander is 37 years old, bought in my student days. I’m not sure if that makes me tight or thrifty.

I’m currently using a funky duvet set from the late 1980s. It’s a bit threadbare in just the one spot, and we had to replace the buttons, but apart from that it’s fine.

I am notoriously frugal regarding household stuff.

OH meanwhile loves his sodding kitchen gadgets.

OP - if a lot of your homeware is 15-20 years old and all needs replacing, is it that you set up home 15-20 years ago and things have all just worn out together?!

im in that sort of situation as DH and I bought this house 16 years ago, we got married 18 years ago and started living together 21 years ago. At those three life points we bought homeware or were given it. Now everything seems to need replacing after years of being all sorted.

John Lewis as it's easy to collect from Waitrose and returns are free, sometimes M&S or Next for similar reason.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 31/01/2026 21:01

I prefer to buy stuff direct from the manufacturer/maker if I can. Otherwise, John Lewis, mostly.

DelinquentSnails · 31/01/2026 21:21

Furniture or soft furnishings we buy from John Lewis. We also use Cotswold Compay and vintage from Vinterior. Decorative items we buy on our travels or in one of the independent interiors and pretty things shops about here.

Last time I bought house stuff it was cushion covers, throws and tablecloth for Halloween. I do like abit of seasonal window dressing.
Although tbf I put it all back after Christmas as it's more witchy/goth themed then Halloween and I kinda like it. Plus it's not like I'll be buying it again next year, the seasonal stuff comes out every year.
Kitchenware I hardly ever buy though. None of my plates or cutlery match as I just a random plate or set of teaspoons if I need them.
