Anyone can help me with this complicated tax Q

I have 2 p/t jobs;

  1. I work 23 hours a week. It’s quite low paid. I pay 85% of my salary into the work pension, so my take home pay/ taxable income is less than £200, so about £2200 a year. I pay NI but no tax on this.

  2. zero hours contract, earn about £300 a month. Being taxed (sometimes £60!) on this

Called HMRC, woman didn’t really know what I was talking about and said my job no.1 was over the tax threshold (gross salary) and therefore I have to pay tax and she was going to update the system. Then she cut me off.

I was calling her to get her to split my tax code.

Is she wrong?

If your basic wage is take home £200 per month, @ 15%, that would be a gross salary of £16,000? So above the tax threshold. You are clearly paying way more than normal into a pension, so I honestly don't know whether that is all tax deductible - it's presumably your choice.

Have you spoken to the payroll department at job 1?

Otherwise, all I can suggest is that you ask for an SA return, and complete ASAP after issue in April. If it turns out that you have paid too much tax, you'll get a refund. It makes life much easier when you have more than one source of income, especially as zero hours contracts can fluctuate so much.
