Best train route to London during engineering works on 8th April

I want to travel from South Mcr/North Cheshire area to London on 8th April, as we've booked cheapo hotel rooms and planned a city break. Unfortunately the Easter weekend engineering works don't finish til that day, and everything is all rail replacements and 4 changes. We would usually go to Euston but that's closed altogether. St Pancras is still open. Thought about splitting the journey.

What would be the most pain free option, if there is one, to go from somewhere within about an hour's drive from home and get the train from there into any of the major London stations? Ideally no changes though I realise this may not be realistic. Stafford looks like a nightmare.

Or is this a completely idiotic idea and I should try to rebook the hotel?

What a pain in the arse! We like to go on holiday by train and have often struggled to get home, having travelled halfway across Europe with no issues. It's so infuriating!

My only suggestion is driving to Sheffield. Trains from there to to St Pancras direct. It may be more than an hour from home, but I think it's your closest different route.

It may be better to drive further down the line (to Leicester, perhaps?) as it might be quicker to drive further.

Trains from Sheffield run to St Pancras. Is that any good for you? They go via Chesterfield and Derby. There are fast services which only stop 2-3 times.

Thanks for the suggestions, will look them up.

Moving the hotel to Thursday 9th April and going then would only be another £20. For those who often use the train around works times, if it's scheduled now to finish on 8th and be back to normal on the 9th, is that likely to happen?

Why don't you go by coach instead. National Express?

TigerRag · 29/01/2026 20:43

Fly?

TrainyWainy · 29/01/2026 20:46

Coach- thought it would probably take too long. For flying, I do live close to Manchester Airport. Which one would people recommend for getting into Central London?

London City Airport, if you have planes going there. Otherwise I doubt flying would save you much time, once you'd travelled into London.

Gatwick - although check that the Gatwick Express Southern rail is running on the dates you need, through to Victoria

Thanks all.

Thinking I may just change the dates, though it is a little annoying. But doable.

When that happened in a previous year we drove to London. Wasn’t ideal.

you could get a train from Stockport to Sheffield & pick up the St Pancras train

parietal · 29/01/2026 21:22

Sheffield to St Pancras should be much quicker and easier than flying.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 29/01/2026 21:55

Man piccadilly - Sheffield
Sheffield - St P

titchy · 29/01/2026 21:58

Trainline suggests Stockport to Sheffield to St P as well. Adds an extra hour.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 29/01/2026 21:58

Just seen you live near Manchester Airport, so its about ten mins from the airport to Piccadilly on the train.

TrainyWainy · 29/01/2026 21:59

Cheers

Lichfield Trent Valley. Or straight down to Reading and into London from there. TBF just ideas, not looked at whether those lines are affected

Comefromaway · 29/01/2026 22:13

Lichfield TV goes into Euston which is closed so it would be rail replacement bus.

Manchester - Reading (might have to change at B'ham New Street). Reading - London Paddington.

I used to do Heald Green - Reading for work from time to time. It's not too bad a journey.
