Getting a new mobile phone. Buy outright or monthly via ee

I'm with EE and my phone is a Samsung android.
At the moment I'm on a SIM only deal £28 unlimited texts, calls and roaming free.
Not bothered about the camera. Only take the occasional photo. I don't stream, play games etc.
This phone is 7 years old and it is getting slow.
Is it better to keep the SIM and just buy a SIM free phone or change to a monthly deal where I get a new phone.
If either option what phone should I get.

That's a terrible SIM only deal 😳

That's a lot of money per month. I'm with EE and I get all that for £13 a month.

I buy my mobile phones outright using Backmarket. I get the pristine condition phones, and they arrive in the boxes with all the gumph and are indeed pristine. I buy Samsung phone from there. Currently using the Samsung Ultra as I like the large screen.

I buy my phones outright from Google and pay EE £10 a month.

Have you looked at 1p mobile? It's EE's network so same coverage but much much cheaper than what you're currently paying.

For £28 a month I would expect a phone included.

I buy a reconditioned phone and then pay sim only - I get a recon iPhone for about £100 (not up to date model!) then contract is £15 a month with unlimited data.

I buy my phones outright and then have a £10 plan. You should look around at cheaper deal.

ValidPistachio · 29/01/2026 17:52

£28 SIM only? They saw you coming!

My SIM only deal with Talkmobile is £8.95 a month and I get the same as you! They're on the Vodafone network so the coverage is really good. My work phone is with O2 and any time I go anywhere rurally in Wales I have to stand on one leg to get reception! Buy a second hand reconditioned phone online - I highly recommend Backmarket.

I had one on contract once because at the time the contract price was marginally cheaper than buying outright. I regretted it - nothing went wrong but I couldn't really relax until the phone was fully paid for.

That's a shockingly bad SIM only deal. I'm with Smarty (part of Three, who have the best coverage in my area) and get the same package for less than half that cost. I always buy phones outright.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/01/2026 00:10

I always have a sim only deal and buy on 0% from Apple.

If you don't stream or play games you probably don't need unlimited data and probably 5 to 10 Gb a month will be more than enough, but check in your settings or account what you use. But thaf data should cost about £5-10 a month.

Plus if you're only now thinking about replacing a 7 YO phone you're unlikely to be interested in the latest tech.

Like a couple of PPs I've just got an as new phone from Back Market. Mine is a Samsung A54 and it was £160. GSM Arena is good for comparing specs and sizes.
