Foods that don't smell

Bit of a niche one, but going to be having house viewings soon and thinking about dinners we can cook that won't leave too much of a smell (open plan living area). No air fryer unfortunately. We can obviously open windows and use the fan but with the best will in the world I feel food smells linger and don't want to put people off!

Lasagne, jacket potatoes, pizza, sausage tray bake with veg, toasted sandwiches? Basically just not curries. If you're concerned about a cooking smell chuck a part baked baguette in the oven just before a viewing - the smell of bread cooking is lovely!

Or fish.

SconehengeRevenge · 27/01/2026 17:12

I'd go the other way... fresh baked bread, zest a lemon or an orange.

Delicious 😋

Editd to add, x post 😂

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 27/01/2026 17:13

I think creamy pasta would work. But agree with the baked bread smell being a good one to make the place seem comforting and like a perfect home

justtheotheronemrswembley · 27/01/2026 17:23

Yeah, just avoid fish, fried onions and anything really spicy like curries etc.

To be honest, the smell of baking bread or bacon sandwiches would probably encourage me to buy the place!

Treylime · 27/01/2026 17:24

Avoid eggs fish curries garlic

JuniorMint14 · 27/01/2026 17:27

Hmm lots of consensus on bread! Will stock up on part baked baguettes 🤣

Cooling dinners in your house is entirely normal. I would find it really odd if I went to a house in the evening and it didn't smell of cooking. Obviously there are very strong smells to avoid but I wouldn't overthink it. I would rather see a house in action rather than a sterile space.

Light a candle in your kitchen when you start cooking.

I personally hate artificial smells and of they were too strong ot woukd put me off buying. Much better to open a window to clear the air.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 27/01/2026 17:58

Just burn some cooks candles

RaininSummer · 27/01/2026 18:02

I honestly don't get why a normal smell which will dissipate would put people off as such but I guess a nice smell will even subconsciously make you feel more positive.

JuniorMint14 · 27/01/2026 19:09

@ApolloandDaphne that's reassuring!

@SleafordSods I agree, I can't stand scented candles or diffusers. They always give me a headache and I find them off putting as a viewer.

Won't overthink it and will just focus on avoiding obvious smells, like curries, fish etc.
Thanks for all the comments.
Edited for spelling.

Ryvita it doesn't smell or taste of anything.😉

LLJETO · 27/01/2026 19:23

Price’s chef’s candles are amazing. I get headaches from a lot of others but I think these use natural scent extracts and they don’t bother me at all. They really help with smells too.

It doesnt need to be scented. Candles absorb smells.

Somersetbaker · 27/01/2026 20:25

You've just summed up why I would never buy an open plan house, plus add in the sound of the dishwasher. Houses for people who never cook.

Emmz1510 · 27/01/2026 22:04

I’d say just avoid anything too greasy, fried, fish, eggs, spicy, overly garlicky. Anything spilled in your oven especially fat will stink each time you use it, so give it a good clean. I think maybe meaty dishes made on the stove top eg mince, I would avoid as well.
A roast chicken is a good shout, tends not to smell much. Most pasta dishes would be fine especially pasta bakes or lasagne. Pizza also good and salad.
I agree about home baking- bread, cakes, cookies, biscuits, anything like that. Fresh flowers also smell good.
