I’m planning ahead for school holidays later in the year and looking for a science museum to take the kids to, DS is 7 but he’s quite an old 7 (his teachers all tell me it’s like having a little old man in the class 🤣) and DD is 14 but happy to go along with most things! We’re based in Lincolnshire but I don’t mind travelling if the museum is worth it!

Magma near Rotherham is quite interesting.

The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester is great. Also Eureka in Halifax was always a fave of ours (although it's a long time since we've been).

MAD in Stratford upon Avon. It's automata, but fascinating and hands-on. Not massive, but sometimes that's appealing.

Eureka in Halifax is great, as is the museum of science and industry in Manchester

Unless it’s changed a lot in the last few years, Eureka will be too far too young for a 14 year old (perfect for the 7 year old though).

The Isaac newton house - woolthorpe manor I think. It is a national trust house with standard historic stuff but in the barns there is a small and excellent science museum. All about newtons theories and v interactive. Not too far from Lincolnshire.

Techniquest in Cardiff, or there’s a similar one in Winchester that I don’t remember the name of sorry! Wonderlab in the Science Museum is also worth the extra cost, plus you can easily spend the whole day there if you do the whole museum plus the Natural History museum.

SkyWalrus · 26/01/2026 21:03

Techniquest in Cardiff is excellent. Lovely location in the Bay and there is also a lovely museum in the city centre with a wonderful Natural History exhibition.

Eureka! Science + Discovery in Wirral - it's the sister site to Eureka! in Halifax. According to the website it's for up to 14s, so for older kids than the Halifax one, although it looks pretty similar from the website - but new. Long way from Lincolnshire - but it's at the mersey ferry terminal so maybe drive to there, visit Eureka!, get on ferry across to Liverpool for a full day to make it worth the drive? I haven't been to this one, but I'm interested in hearing whether it's as good as it looks.

Techniquest in Cardiff is brilliant for all ages - our DS loved it as a toddler and still enjoyed it the last time he went when he was 17 (with a younger family member).

We the Curious in Bristol is great, for all ages.

My DB is a science teacher in S Wales. He tries to organise a Y9 trip there every year.

Thank you all! I’ll check these places out and try and plan a trip 😊

StrongestWoman · 27/01/2026 13:29

Second Nemo in Amsterdam if you have the budget.

soontobeamama · 27/01/2026 14:38

Not sure where you live or are looking to travel, but Glasgow Science Centre is amazing.
