In between coats….how often do you wear them,,,,

I live in the rainy northwest where a cagoule is the most appropriate everyday coat.
but I love a smart coat, I’m a sruff and a nice wool coat smartens me up.

but I can never wear them except a few days in spring or autumn. When do you wear yours?

When it's not raining which isn't often at the moment. Currently living in my Tretorn waterproof coat which is super warm and reasonably stylish.

AnneofBohemia · 26/01/2026 07:49

I wear my smart wool coat in the winter whenever it’s stopped raining. I feel completely different in it compared with my practical long raincoat. It cheers me up a bit!

PersephoneParlormaid · 26/01/2026 07:50

I’ve often longed for a lovely woollen coat, but they aren’t really practical day to day. And I’ve never found them to be that warm unless you layer up underneath.

Literally never. I have one that I wore to the office occasionally then it was abandoned for a better huge puffa coat with pockets that kept me cosy. I don't know why I'm keeping the smart coat as it's been sitting their since before the pandemic.

Does a trench count as an in between coat? I wear that in early summer and autumn. It's the one time I look vaguely grown up.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 26/01/2026 07:52

Not enough! Bought a couple on vinted last autumn and not really had a chance to wear them yet which is ridiculous! It’s either been really wet or bitterly cold!

bumphousebump · 26/01/2026 08:36

Yes I feel completely different in my wool coat, smart and grown up and put together. Then I open the front door and it’s muzzling, so I trudge back to the coat stand to put on something waterproof…

I really wanted a good formal woolen coat love them. Decided to buy a slightly cheaper version of what I wanted to see how often I would actually wear it. Have it a year and have worn it about 5 times, so sticking with the cheaper version not worth forking out 300 for the one I wanted.

This was me this morning 😂

Also in the NW, I only buy hooded showerproof coats or raincoats in various thickness and lengths depending on the level of rain and coldness. The ones I have are from Joules and are fairly smart. I've been tempted by a wool coat but I don't think I'd end up using it.

ThirdStorm · 26/01/2026 09:25

I have a beautiful long wool coat, but its impractical (and too nice) for every day use sadly. Right now I need warm and showerproof. Then the weather will get too warm and a coat isn't needed!

itsthetea · 26/01/2026 09:26

Hum wore my wool coat once in the last few years

BitOutOfPractice · 26/01/2026 09:42

I just bought a beautiful coat for a winter wedding. Of course I haven’t worn it since.

do you know what, I might put it on today. It’s not too cold here and it’s dry for now. Plus, an umbrella. Just in case.

AnneofBohemia · 27/01/2026 14:47

Did you wear your lovely coat @BitOutOfPractice ?
I have taken to wearing mine in any opportunity now. Wear your good coat and enjoy it!

gototogo · 27/01/2026 14:50

My smart black wool coat is rarely worn but it tend to be going into the city when it’s cold and dry because theres lots of outside seating at the pubs we like or with formal clothing plus funerals of course. I wear my short light weight puffer mostly, no good walking below 8 degrees or so but as I’m usually driving it’s perfect nipping in and out of the car. I have a heavy duty waterproof for proper outdoor use

Handeyethingyowl · 27/01/2026 14:53

Almost never. The long Seasalt one that makes me look like Barbara Woodhouse, half the year.

SwirlyGates · 27/01/2026 15:02

I don't actually own a smart coat. I wouldn't get much wear out of it.

Oh yes, I try the Seasalt ones - but BW is a great description!

I don’t class my wool coats as in between coats, to me they are winter coats. I live in London so it’s never that cold. I wear them all the time in the winter except when it’s properly raining.

I wish I had but since I wrote that post it has literally not ceased raining. So I had to go for my scruffy waterproof instead. I’m mean it’s not a scruffy coat per se, I just feel scruffy in it.

MopAndBucketLady · 27/01/2026 16:50

Never I wear a waterproof one when raining or anything under 5 degrees. Over 5 degrees just a jumper and t shirt. I hate wearing coats

canuckup · 27/01/2026 16:59

I live abroad, it's currently minus 20 here so it's a North Face parka all the way

'Trench coat season' is about four weeks per year, Spring and autumn.

TheDevilFindsWorkForIdleMums · 27/01/2026 17:09

I wear a berghaus parka......it's very warm and practical for this time of year.

SheSpeaks · 27/01/2026 17:18

I have way too many coats. I love coats. I wear them all.

In the last week

Wool smart/nice looking - to evening birthday party, walked to venue and back, and to theatre in a cab
Down jacket - has gone out as an under layer for lighter weight coats multiple times and ha but obviously down has no chance in rain.
Lightweight water resistant, breathable - going out for long run
Fluffy and cute, warm but no chance if it rained - several local errands
Very waterproof mid weight boring looking - today for long walk

Ive also been out more than once with no coat , mostly for short runs (top and leggings, no point)

I have a woollen coat that I used to wear a lot in winter, but winter is generally snowy where I am rather than rainy so its fine for that, but then I gave it to DD and had to get myself another coat and couldn't find another woollen one I like (was only going to buy second hand, I don't have money for brand new coats!) so got more normal winter coats. Now, somehow, DD has my woollen coat, another woollen coat, and a trench coat and I'm not sure why I haven't taken my original one back yet. Perhaps I will now.
