Liver function test results panicking

Sorry posting here for traffic,

My Serum ALT level is 140 and the normal range is between 0 and 55. Has anyone had abnormal results and been ok?

The results are on my NHS app so I’ve not spoken to anyone yet. I can see they have scheduled me an appointment for Tuesday on the phone.

Was there a reason you had a blood test? I had some crazy ALT readings that were the side effect of medication that I was on. As soon as I stopped, my liver function went back to normal.

Have you been taking anything like Ibuprofen? That can raise it.

Sunshineinmadrid · 25/01/2026 20:21

Most common cause is fatty liver which is prevalent throughout the world.

Statins?

Allaboutthecats · 25/01/2026 20:27

Medication, recent virus, fatty liver

I am on statins yes and I’m also on aripiprazole which is why I had the tests done.

They will probably change the statin meds and re test later. A lot of statins can affect liver function tests.

I had abnormal readings and had repeat tests over 3 months . Eventually they booked me a full abdominal scan, liver kidneys, pancreas and gall bladder which came back normal. The next blood test was normal too and GP thought the results were skewed by the meds I had been prescribed.

If they are monitoring because of your meds, they may consider changing them or monitoring further.

I was on cancer meds that led to similar results. They just continued to keep an eye on them. I think if they’d gone much above 200, they would have been worried. It indicates mild liver inflammation, which is not great, but not terrible either.

To give you an idea, people with liver damage from alcohol can have results in the 2000-3000 range. So 140 is still not too far outside the normal range.

A friend of mine had similar results a few years ago on a work scheme fitness test, they said it was maybe fatty liver. They also said it would be in the thousands to be really worried. He went on a diet and booze free for 6 weeks then got tested again, completely normal. He put the original results down to being tested in January after eating and drinking solidly for a few weeks over Xmas.

Mine went up like that when I was on olanzapine.
