It’s always worth getting anything checked that’s bothering you. Unfortunately, I have stage 3 melanoma (started as a mole and has spread to lymph nodes). The most obvious difference between a normal mole (it’s fine to have loads) and melanoma is that melanoma often appears out of nowhere, grows and changes, and can itch or bleed.

If you have lots of moles that you’ve always had, they’re probably fine. If you have a new mole that is growing, itching or bleeding, more concerning.

There is absolutely no reason not to get them checked though. Always err on the safe side. The GP can check one if you’re worried or you can pay privately to have a full body look over. It’s very worth doing especially if you have them on your back and can’t see them easily.

Even if they say they’re fine, if you go away and a few months later, they look different, go back for a second look. The GP sent me away at first saying mine was ‘just a sun spot’ and it definitely wasn’t.
