If you left the UK where would you go?

Talking to OH today about the possibility of Reform winning the next election. He says he wants to leave the UK if that happens. I feel the same. We don’t have European passports. Where would you go?

Maybe, could you try do do something against Reform winning first?

  • Read some works by Timothy Snyder (20 lessons and Road to unfreedom)
  • Join a campaign for your preferred party
  • Join a party
  • Support communal life

This. There is still time before next election. Honestly do all you can to support the push back. If nothing else donate. If you don't want to donate to a political party, donate to organisations like The Good Law project or Hope not Hate. This has to be easier than moving countries and giving up our homes.

It is not inevitable. I was very surprised to find out a relative of mine is no longer a Farage supporter after supporting him since UKIP days. They have switched to the Tories. Still not my choice but......

Romancingthestones · 25/01/2026 16:22

A quick look at the FWR board on here will soon put anyone off funding the fox killing grifter responsible for the Good Law Project.

Good Laugh Project or Hate not Hope?

Good lord above!

If we could afford it, Canada or Norway (Norway over the other Scandinavian countries because I speak Norwegian).

ChurchWindows · 25/01/2026 18:23

I would stay. I'd wait and try to vote Reform out.

If Farage performs as well as PM as he has an MP and MEP then they'll be gone within 5 years.

Without an EU passport, maybe Ireland (republic of). Same language, stable Government, has held back the anti immigrant Right Wing attempts to be elected (largely), great education system, cheap university fees (no student loans) and so on.

On the other hand it looks bloody expensive to live there, and there's no NHS (but there is a free public hospital system for everyone). However, sacrifices can be made!

I wouldn’t move for political reasons but I have a disability which is SO much easier in warm weather so honestly if I could I’d go somewhere warm, Spain or France probably. I don’t like France due to the food (I have bowel issues and they use a lot of stuff that really doesn’t agree with me) but I could totally do Spain.

i speak French reasonably well, am learning Spanish but can’t leave the uk at the moment as have an elderly mother.

ShanghaiDiva · 25/01/2026 18:49

I did leave for 25 years: Germany, Austria and China. If we were younger: Canada or Australia.

We would go to Ireland... We are thinking of going to Ireland and half a plan is in place...

I’ve had exactly the same thought as the OP today. Ireland is right on the top of my list.

To those saying don’t leave just because Reform get in, what’s happening in the US is genuinely terrifying. I don’t want any chance of living in a place where the government have a load of henchmen just executing people for nothing. Where America leads, we stupidly follow.

Gettingbysomehow · 25/01/2026 18:51

Canada. I love the weather and the gorgeous scenery. I didn't move there as I had too many family obligations in the UK.

MannequinsArePeopleToo · 25/01/2026 18:52

Canada

Sesma · 25/01/2026 18:58

Are you retired, if not you will be wanting to go where your work takes you, no point in moving if no job.

LlynTegid · 25/01/2026 18:59

It would be France for me. However I wouldn't leave, and don't think Reform will have a majority come 2029 and whoever the outgoing Labour Prime Minister is by then.

If we could get jobs Canada, if not Ireland. I have an Irish parent and can get myself and our kids Irish passports. DH has worked in Ireland before for his British employer and I don’t think we’d have an issue getting jobs there.

I have family still in Ireland and it is very expensive but I’m not sure it’s actually that much more expensive than life here now.

UK citizens can move freely, live and work in Ireland, no visa or Irish passport needed, that's under the Common Travel Area agreement. I think there are reciprocal arrangements for pensions and other benefits aswell if they apply.

Romancingthestones · 25/01/2026 19:15

I think if we were younger, we'd have gone to Canada (I'm a Canadian citizen), but France suits us now.
