Pay panic. Help?

Hi all,

I resigned from my current workplace. My current workplace urged me to hand my notice in asap so they could advertise. I had my offer letter and confirmation of start dates. I was told my start date was x date and that pay commences on the 1st of that date and contract starts on x date so I can wrote my resignation to the date prior.

since then HR have contacted me stating that they made a slight error and the official contract starts on Y date and now I’m assuming pay commences from that date too which has about a 10 day gap between exiting my old contract and starting the new one.

I am now panicking about what to do because I’ve handed in my notice and it’s been actioned, am I allowed to amend it, I can’t afford to be without my pay.

Could anyone advise? I’ll probably seek clarity from the new school first. But if I have to will my current school make the adjustment. I handed my notice in only a few days ago.

I'd probably speak to your current work place abd see what they can do. Whilst not obliged they may keep you on for handover/ training. But if not you're going to have to suck up the 10 days and enjoy a break/ budget for it as best you can x

It’s totally up to your current employer if they want to agree to allow the change unfortunately.

Are they both schools? Is this around term time dates and it’s 10 days of school holidays that you will be unemployed for?

You can try to change your resignation date but they don’t have to accept. If you are term time only support staff then and your last day is right before school holidays you may be entitled to holiday pay.

I’d be more concerned about a gap in service and contractual rights lost as a result. If it’s hoop holidays I’d be pushing for new employer to honour their start date and explain what you have lost as a result.

They’re both schools. I was told the payroll starts at my new school from 1st May contract begins on 10th May so I assumed that my last day of service would then need to be 30 April. I’m panicking slightly now because this confuses me and worrying my school could say anything now as my resignation went in on Friday just gone

Also I’m a teacher.

I thought teachers would give resignation up to the end of the respective holidays and start the new school the day after. I'm sure your current school would be able to help

PinkFrogss · 24/01/2026 14:00

Those dates seem random for a teacher, usually it’s written in employment contracts you can only resign with a last day of employment which is at the end of a term. If you’re leaving in the middle of term though your current school may be very happy to keep you for another 10 days though so could work in your favour, it will probably be hard for them to recruit to a mid term vacancy.

PinkFrogss · 24/01/2026 14:00

As soon as I hit post I realised that is assuming you are in England. Apologies if you are in Scotland or somewhere with different term dates.

CoastalCalm · 24/01/2026 14:09

You also need to check the cut off date for salary when you start new job to be sure you won’t have to work more than a month before being paid

It’s through a holiday

If it’s during the holidays I would expect new role to start on the first day of the holidays. Contact them again and raise this.

Are you in a union? They can advise on this as well. You don’t want to lose your continuous service if at all possible.
