Are you a stylish person? Good taste? How would you furnish this flat?

No repainting or changing floors or tiles, just furniture. Desperately looking for ideas from people who have a good eye.

Its pretty much a blank canvas.
2 bed flat, white walls, light wood floors.

I do like sage green but im not sure how well it would go with the kitchen tiles. The kitchen and living room are one room.

I think you first need to think about how you want to use the space. Dining? How many people regularly need a table? Chilling? How many people need seats? Do you want to add a TV?

TheMorgenmuffel · 23/01/2026 07:38

Good point! Up to 4 people, nice sofa, wall mounted tv, not too much furniture, dont want it to be hard to walk round,

I would like it to look comfy, bright and cheerful.

I was thinking the unit that splits the kitchen and living room could be an eating area, but maybe a small table would work.

Oh I love sage green and personally I think it can go with most colourways, so your kitchen tiles will be fine.

I would add a couple of bar stools to the counter , if that’s the right height, and a bistro cafe table on the balcony.

A soft green sofa and a couple of comfy chairs in a contrast - orange, pink or purple perhaps, but comfort first. Match the bar stools to the comfy chair. Nice rug for the seating area and some side tables with lamps.

If you need a dining table, look for a drop leaf that can be pushed aside, especially if you don’t need to seat 4 regularly.

Needs layers of different soft textures from soft furnishings and different shades of one warm colour tone to break up the bleakness. Those grey tiles are grim. What way is the main window facing? Introduce height and some trailing green plants. Lamps, rug and maybe start with an inspirational and personal piece of art which may have a core colour that you could keep working out from. Your sofa and cushions will likely be the best place to anchor the space and add warmth.

Take photographs and put them in Chat GPT.

Floor is fine.

I'd really consider re-tiling the kitchen its very dark and dank. Also dated.

Decor depends on what you want.

if you like sage... for the bedroom
Card room green on all walls in bedroom with beige and brown tones for the bedroom / bed .

Card room It looks dark as a tester but is AMAZING on the wall.

RueChercheMidi · 23/01/2026 08:56

What aspect does the main room face? Is it quite dark?

Denim4ever · 23/01/2026 09:05

In the cottage our dining room is also our music room so we have a gate leg table. It folds to the size of a low bookcase and can be used with one or both sides up. I've seen more modern versions with foldable chairs that store inside folded gateleg tables. Are they stylish? Hmm, you probably could find one that suited a modern interior. The rationale for getting one would be if you needed to entertain 4-8 people from time to time.

Re sage - love the colour and it does work with some blues as it's quite a bluey green. Navy tones contrast well.

Theboredpanda · 23/01/2026 10:09

I love designing spaces in my head lol. So this is what I’d do if I wanted to make it comfy, bright and cheerful. I’d get a big colourful rug to make it look cosy and give it some colour, a comfy corner sofa in teal, orange or mustard - good for maximising space and making it look comfy. A nice rustic wooden coffee table. Some warm, thick curtains to go across the sliding door. If I was painting the walls sage & had a bright rug I’d sofa I’d get the curtains in a cream/light beige colour. A couple of bar stools for the breakfast bar thingy. A small wooden extending dining table that extends big, that can go up against the wall, underneath the tv mounted on the wall perhaps, with 2 chairs either side and other chairs in a cupboard maybe. It’s all about lighting for me so I’d get a nice big floor lamp for the corner and maybe put some shelves up behind the sofa where you could put smaller lamps/plants/books. I’d also put a couple of big green plants around the room to make it look bright. Good luck!

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 23/01/2026 11:06

I would avoid sage green with the red brick and black tiles. Darker green might work

Id want lots of soft comfortable furnishing, in materials you like - I’d choose velvet and plush throws with maybe old stained oak furniture.

photos or prints in plain black frames might go well with the black tiles

17to35 · 23/01/2026 11:12

The red colour that flanks the balcony has more of an effect on the room than you might think.
Take that into account. I would prioritise changing the tiles. That will make the most difference.
Add a bit of pattern- if only on cushions.

UpMyself · 23/01/2026 11:18

Keep the walls as they are until you've got a sense of how it looks at different times of the day/year.

I'd get an overall idea of how you'll use the space, and what your paths in each room are.
e.g.
Bedroom - sleep, getting dressed, putting on make-up etc.
Living room - tv, eating, having a cuppa while sitting on sofa, walking through it to the kitchen...

(I'm not claiming to be stylish or have good taste. The reason for not changing wall colour is that what might look lovely on a sunny afternoon in July might be totally depressing on a morning in January.)

Atlanti · 23/01/2026 17:02

Can you share a floor plan as the furniture layout will be critical?

If you do go for sage green walls I would make any floor length curtains the same colour as this will make the space look bigger.

RueChercheMidi · 23/01/2026 17:33

The OP has said she can't repaint or retile, though, so I assume it's a rental?

TheMorgenmuffel · 23/01/2026 17:33

Thank you everyone for the lovely ideas. I will get hold of the floor plan.

After all my talk of sage green I saw a vibrant yellow patchwork sofa and fell in love!! It would probably look ridiculous though.
