A question about Next account, returns.

Hi,
I bought DD some items from Next for Xmas. She said she liked them but never took them out of the bags. I asked her if shebwould like to swap them for something else so we went to Next today.

I expected the money to be put on a giftcard but the lady just processed it as a return.

I'm a bit confused as to what will happen as I got them on my next account and have already paid them off completely. (I do owe £80 for other items bought in Jan)

Also it says online if an item is returned after 28 days (these are over that) you will get an evoucher for that amount.

But the lady on till said I should get a refund?

Any ideas?

I mean I have a lot available to spend but do you mean i will get £67 credit separately to my available balance?

Sorry, I don't always find things other people see as straightforward easy 😮‍💨

They were purchased end of Nov

Were the items bought using a next account (as in the Next credit thing)? Because refunds should always go to the original payment method.

I bought them on the pay 3 credit thing.

So paid nothing at point of purchase but then after Xmas I wanted to clear my debt and so paid the whole thing off as I thought she was keeping them.

My thinking is if you have another balance on there since, it’ll go on to that as it’s the original method of payment. If you had nothing on there and it was an overpayment you would probably be able to contact them to get that turned in to a refund.

She would have given you a receipt , I would check that and see what it says. If it's an evoucher it would include a code that you manually put in for a subsequent purchase. Usually this is emailed too.
If it's a refund it should go back onto your account within a few hours.

The money will go back on to your next account. You say you have an £80 balance on there, the £67 will be taken off that balance so you will now owe £13 on your account. It’s not difficult to understand!

Op is wondering if it's a refund or credit though.. because it's over 28 days since the original purchase normally you get a credit but cashier said it will be a refund. So it is confusing and not that easy to understand!!

I have mild learning difficulties and have never used a credit/catalogue account before :(

They will only refund using the method you used to buy, to the purchaser.

Doggymummar · 23/01/2026 09:13

Gift cards are usually what the recipient of the item would get, as they dont have the original method of purchase. As you bought them, and you returned them it will be processed to the original form of payment.
