Would you send this back?

Ordered something. Courier “tried to deliver” 8 times saying they left a card each time. There was someone there all 8 times and no card left. After a to and fro with the supplier they issued a refund. 2 days later the parcel arrived. Would you send it back? If it matters, it’s a big business.

I wouldn't

Loyaltotheoil · 22/01/2026 15:07

What was it? And how big is the big business? Are we talking Amazon?

Arlanymor · 22/01/2026 15:10

I would contact the company to ask what to do. I know I will be in the minority here because many people think that stealing getting free stuff is fine if (a) you've been inconvenienced by the third party courier and (b) it's a 'big' company.

Notquitethetruth · 22/01/2026 15:10

What difference does the size of the business matter?
You could hsve refused the delivery. Presumably the successful delivery is recorded.
Of course you should send it back. Otherwise it's theft as you have had your refund. Why do you think you shouldn't? Surprised you are asking the question.

sharkstale · 22/01/2026 15:35

Just keep it and wait and see if you hear from them. I doubt you will if they're a big company.

To be honest, I wouldn’t hesitate if it was a small business. I couldn’t refuse my order-they put it through the letter box. It was from the London Graphics Centre-part of Theo Paphitis’ empire, so pretty big. Worth about 20 quid. The only reason I wouldn't send it back is the ridiculous and inconvenient delivery saga.

I would contact them to explain. They may suggest you keep it. If they want it to be returned, they’ll have to send someone to collect, at their expense.

Stickytoffeetartt · 22/01/2026 16:59

I think it's always worth being truthful down the line. It happened to me with Amazon at Christmas. Ordered two Alexas , said they were delivered but no sign..checked with the neighbours etc. Waited the minimum 24 hours before contacting them. They issued a refund and hey presto the package arrived the very next day. I rang them to explain. They were grateful as it probably saved lots of digging for them. I'm content in the fact that if I have an issue in future they will believe me . Also I would not want the drivers to get a bad name, it's a thankless job as it is.

I agree.

Catisheavyonmylap · 22/01/2026 17:09

No I wouldn’t send it back, they’ve mucked you about enough and their issue is with the crap courier company they use.

As long as you can justify it, then do as you see fit. 🙄
The company won't suffer any loss as the cost to them will be lumped on to other customers. The amount is irrelevant as is the size of the company. Seems your difficulties were with the couriers not the company. Why did you not refuse delivery? Their records may well show now that it was delivered

🤣You just quoted the post where I explained why I didn’t refuse delivery!

I would phone them. They’ll let you keep it I imagine. If not, say they need tk organiser a courier to collect from your door at their expense.

I can promise you that made zero difference to Amazon 😂 The people on the phone dgaf, Amazon believe you anyway, I don’t know what you mean by saves them a lot of digging, what they digging for? This happens to them multiple times daily, they won’t go searching for anything. Amazon are that huge the have to throw out perfectly good rand new items. Watch the documentary “buy now”

The amount of do gooders in here thinking their honestly gets them anywhere in life 😂 Keep it, it’s 20 quid, it’s not worth the hassle and being a big company I can tell you now, they haven’t even noticed

This exactly. When faced with paying for correcting their inability to use a competent courier, they will probably not actually want to do so, but this makes it their decision and means there's no way you've stolen it!

ZookeeperSE · 23/01/2026 09:24

I would send it back, or offer to pay for it if I still wanted it, yes, because I’m fundamentally honest. They may say don’t worry about it, in which case, win win. In fact I have done exactly that, this week, with something that supposedly went missing in the post before Christmas - also a from big company.
And the ludicrous idea that makes me a ‘do gooder’ explains a lot about modern life tbh.

I put something similar in another post about two deliveries. When I mentioned theft/dishonesty I got pulled up for being sanctimonious 😂

Sometimes they'll issue a refund without needing to send the goods back. If you're doing this with a lot of orders eventually your motives will be questioned and youll be told to send the item back. If that's the case we could get freebies daily. Tell them you didn't receive your order & get a refund each time? Don't be ridiculous.

On mumsnet, you are not allowed to call posters "thieves" when they take things that don't belong to them.

Lostsoul35 · 25/01/2026 00:56

Keep it. They need to find a better courier.

Telling someone they do good things is a compliment. That’s why it’s called good.

CurlewKate · 25/01/2026 14:51

In case anyone is interested, I’ve let the company know and said I am happy to send it back if they send me a return label. Watch this space.

Honesty isn't 'do gooding' - it's acting in accordance with what you believe to be morally right. My moral compass doesn't change according to how much something costs, I'd be bloody worried if it did.

Yes I get called sanctimonious on here for the same - the word those people are usually scrabbling for is 'honest' - it's just not in their lexicon.
