Presumably it's on file somewhere, I've just never known.

Donate blood

Arlanymor · 22/01/2026 15:04

If you've donated blood you can find out from the donation service. If you've been pregnant or ever taken a blood test it will be on your medical record. You can also buy at home testing kits that are relatively reliable.

Clickncollect · 22/01/2026 15:08

Funnily enough I was pondering this the other day for my 9 year old son as I don’t know his blood group! I know mine as I donate blood but no clue on his!

A little pricey, but this will do the trick if nothing currently on record for you:
https://www.medichecks.com/pages/search-results?type=product&q=blood+group+test&productListPgNo=1

I found mine out via a complete blood panel done privately (I'd just had my 6th miscarriage, so the specialist consultant wanted to check things over).

justtheotheronemrswembley · 22/01/2026 15:44

Contact your GP surgery and ask them to check if it is on your medical record?

dementedpixie · 22/01/2026 15:03

Donate blood

I tried they keep rejecting me.

Can I access that online or do I need to call in? Was hoping not to bother the GP surgery.

Pretty sure I don't know my kids either! Not in the red book as far as I can tell.

Well I just remembered I had blood taken privately a couple of years ago too so wonder why I still don't have this info!

It's not checked at birth unless your mother is rhesus negative

SwedishEdith · 22/01/2026 16:02

I was told when I was pregnant but I've never been told my kids' blood groups. Didn't think this was a thing.

That's not true.

TonTonMacoute · 22/01/2026 16:04

When I was younger the only person I knew who knew their blood group had a rare type, and had to carry a card in case of accidents.

I didn't discover mine until I was pregnant, it was O, like most peoples!

Greybeardy · 22/01/2026 16:06

your blood group would have been checked in pregnancy and will be somewhere in your maternity notes. If they never spoke to you about the things that might warrant an anti-d injection then you can be pretty sure your Rh +ve.

As an aside though, from a medical pov it's completely academic whether you know your/your child's blood group - we'd never use that as the basis for matching blood.

herbalteabag · 22/01/2026 16:07

They don't tell you or have it on file as far as I know. I think you have to pay for a test? I know mine but I only found out when I was pregnant, I don't know my children's. I think eldest is rhesus negative because I am and I wasn't offered anti D until after second was born.

Rubbish!

InfoSecInTheCity · 22/01/2026 16:09

I donated blood, they sent me a keyring with it on. Other than that I’m pretty sure it’s in the red book from when I was pregnant with DD years ago.

My dc were both checked after birth i am also Rehus Negative and they were checked and it was written in their redbooks

GasPanic · 22/01/2026 16:12

I didn't know mine and had to get it for work.

You put in "know your blood type" into Amazon and you can get a test kit that you can do at home for £10.

It's not done as standard even privately. It has to be specifically requested and there's generally no neef to know. I've had loads of private blood tests over the years and they have never said.

SilenceInside · 22/01/2026 16:13

@Coffeeishot they did a heel prick on your newborn to check for blood group only?

itsgettingweird · 22/01/2026 16:16

I was told DS when he was born.

im O- and he’s A -.

Bit he wasn’t born in th UK so may not be of help for you.
