Anyone really good with excel?

spreadsheets isn’t something I am used to so spending some time this morning learning.

On my spreadsheet I have the usual excel generated numbers down the left side. In the spreadsheet I am going to create I will also have numbered entries. I am showing a photo hopefully of what I mean.

As my spreadsheet grows I will need to add in rows as I go. These additional rows can be anywhere on the sheet, not just at the bottom. I know how to add a row but is there a way of excel automatically re-numbering my spreadsheet so for example in my photo I add a row between 3 and 4, can I format the cells so 5 onwards automatically re-numbers numbers itself?

Anyone really good with excel?

=row()

If you have headers in row 1 then =row()-1

You can renumber the whole table in a couple of clicks. So if you insert new row above your 7, for example, you can highlight your 1 and 2 and then drag that down to the bottom of the table using the little square box in the corner of the cell and it’ll update all the numbers.

Have you got copilot or similar AI assistant available to you? Sometimes you can upload your spreadsheet, tell it what you need and it will do it for you

In cell a3 type =sum(a2+1) then copy that down the column.

Thanks. This one makes the most sense to me. When I clicked and dragged to the bottom the entire spreadsheet became number 7 rather than 7, 8, 9 etc.

I don't think this will keep working when OP inserts rows.
They'd need to recopy the format down again, so it's just as easy to use the solution that a PP suggested

You have to highlight at least two cells to drag down so that excel knows you want to drag the pattern.

I’d suggest highlight 1 and 2 then dragging the whole way down, rather than starting at 7 if that makes sense?

Got it! Thank you all so much.
