Toddler acting weird on antibiotic

Has anyone child ever been given trimethoprim? Dd had a uti and hasn’t been well with it at all, she’s been taking the antibiotics since Monday night but I don’t think there’s much improvement, infact it’s like her mood swings have gotten worse ! She fell asleep yesterday and woke up in such a state, she was hitting and kicking me but wanted me at the same time, constant crying and moaning, I had to force calpol into her mouth and she eventually calmed down.
The same thing happened last night but it went on for much longer, basically all night of this crying and moaning, thrashing around. I’m wondering if it’s the antibiotic ?

I'd say it's more likely to be the uti that's causing that rather than trimethoprim.. I could be wrong! I've had trimethoprim a million times including as a child and pretty sure no side effects like that were ever mentioned, obviously get medical advice if you're concerned though :)

Thank you, I did think maybe it’s the uti but surely she should be getting better now after 48 hours of antibiotics not worse ? I know utis cause mood swings in little ones and confusion in the elderly anyway but as I say it’s got worse not better. She’s also been doing some almighty farts at night so maybe it’s wind ?!

Can anyone else advise ? Really worried about her, I am going to request another consultation with the doctors when the open

I’d be calling 111, not waiting for the GP. It’s likely it’s a stubborn one and she needs IV antibiotics.

Have you made sure that whatever caused it has stopped? So that it doesn’t have the chance to hang around.

I’ve no idea what’s caused it, she is potty training and doing well but she keeps pooing in her knickers instead of using the potty as she’s freaking out about that, so I’m thinking had a uti happened this way?!

I’m suprised they prescribed trimethoprim as it’s pretty useless against most UTIs these days, get back to the GP today; it’s the UTI causing her trouble not the antibiotics

TeenYearsAreBrutal · 22/01/2026 07:45

My DD was hospitalized with a kidney infection at that age. I would call 111 for advice asap.

don’t worry about the why it’s happened - it does and it’s definitely not uncommon in toddlers/preschoolers.

Crazyfrog44 · 22/01/2026 07:46

She probably needs nitrofirutoin not trimethoprim. Tell gp she isn't getting better.

fungibletoken · 22/01/2026 08:01

Poor DD. Did you manage to get a urine sample from her? With suspected UTIs there are normally two steps at our GP surgery: a nurse dips the urine sample the same day to check for signs of an infection, and if positive it's sent off to the hospital lab to try to work out which bacteria are causing it. The latter helps make sure you're on the right antibiotic (which you normally start in the meantime) but normally takes a couple of days to get a result.

The GP is not great at following up on the second step so worth speaking to them today to ask if the results are back, and otherwise to flag that she doesn't seem to be improving. Hope she's feeling better soon.

Sounds like a night terror which are more common when ill. As she isn’t getting better she needs to see GP today.

Hi, yes we did, it looked like milky orange juice! Never seen anything like it ! Dh asked the gp if he would be sending off the sample but he just shrugged and said no.

Oh how frustrating. Ok I'd definitely give them a call today to see if it's time to switch to another. I think by 48h you'd normally expect improvement.

To pick up another comment about I also wouldn't worry too much about how it happened if just once. Even if she's pooing in her knickers (quite normal in potty training) that comes to the same as pooing in a nappy which she'd be doing otherwise.

pandowo · 22/01/2026 09:19

That’s what’s worrying me though if we don’t get her poking on the potty or toilet soon it’s going to keep happening.
dh just taking her back to the doctors so hopefully we’ll get some different antibiotics

OP posts:
pandowo · 22/01/2026 09:54

I’m not happy at all, dh just got back from the doctors and the dr he saw I’ve had experience with in the past and it hasn’t been great. Anyways, he said utis in children are not common so if she gets another one she will be referred to peads. Hadn’t switched her antibiotics even though after 48+ hours there has been no improvement.

Should I be asking for a second opinion?

I would, yes.

They’re definitely not uncommon at that age - unfortunately it’s because their toileting and wiping habits aren’t as thorough as they could be!
