Brexit overturn because of Trump? Do we need a more united Europe?

Saw this idea circulating, it's definitely a thought?

Is it? Reverse the outcome of a referendum because it’s no longer convenient?

DustyMaiden · 21/01/2026 13:37

Divide and conquer, shame they didn’t think about that before.

It's not as easy as flipping a switch.
We left, legally, politically and physically (as in people, places and structures).
I'm not sure the country is ready to hear "we've been colossal prats and need a close alliance with our heavyweight neighbours." It's going to cause upset and hand Reform an easy win.

And all of that is assuming the EU wants us back (hint: it doesn't and won't be on the same terms).

I think we are a generation away from a closer relationship and I don't know if we will ever reunionise.

Unlikely to happen, and in any event, it is not up to UK to decide to rejoin, that would be the EU's decision over many multiples of negotiations.

However, UK can show solidarity with its EU neighbours outside of the EU surely?

Id like to see a properly unified EU first ie..strong and functioning

What is happening now with Trump is highlighting the importance of the EU alliance and exactly why we were wrong to leave it.

Brexit has left the UK in a precarious position, still part of NATO allied with our EU neighbours militarily, when Trump as we know is all about trade deals, and obviously we are outside any EU agreement on those.

That makes this a very difficult path for Starmer to tread. And I imagine we are not entirely trusted by our EU allies because of it either.

But to answer your question op, I love the way everyone assumes that the EU would welcome us back with open arms! We ruffled a lot of feathers when we left.

But who knows, I suppose if the situation with the USA becomes even more grave, it’s not an impossibility, but I doubt re-joining the EU is on the cards any time soon.

I think Vance may possibly be even more dangerous than Trump though so you never know in the much longer term. The USA could be a catalyst I suppose.
