Would you judge a friend for stealing?

So met up with a friend today.
She told me she had bought a knitted top and trousers from a store (I won’t name names but its not exactly known for its quality clothes)
She said she bought it before Christmas and after a hour of wearing it ,it went bobbly.
Its been all over Tik Tok going bobbly etc

Anayway she said she took it back and they wouldn’t return it as she removed label and said it was “wear and tare”
So she said she went in fitting rooms and swapped it for something else.

i just find this a bit wrong
Me personally would of just took the £20 loss not resort to stealing.
She doesn’t think it’s stealing but it is tho isn’t it…let’s be honest.
I don’t know ..would you feel the same as me or am I being precious?
The quality is rubbish and the prices have gone up
I don’t shop there much anymore.

She's stealing.

Arlanymor · 20/01/2026 20:00

Yes it's stealing. It's not that hard to understand.

youalright · 20/01/2026 20:01

Yes its stealing and I would judge anyone for stealing

Fedupofthisgame · 20/01/2026 20:02

I could not be a friend with someone who does this.

inkyspells · 20/01/2026 20:02

Oh I know I totally get it
I said it like it is…she tried to justify it by saying about quality etc
Its put me off meeting up with her again if I’m honest.
We don’t see each other often as she lives around 2 hours away
I don’t know it’s made me feel a bit icky

Oh dear that does sound rather dicey I must admit.

How did she get the security tag off though, they seem attached so tight and I know from experience pliers will not remove without damaging the fabric. Does she have a magnetic tool? If so where did she get it

inkyspells · 20/01/2026 20:14

No @CalmShakerthis shop doesn’t security tag as it’s known as a cheap shop
well I don’t think they do
I’ve never had any on my items

From what I have read , petty theft is the first stepping stone into a career criminal so I would be on my guard around that one Inky if you get my drift

PurpleVine · 20/01/2026 20:36

It's stealing. I don't like thieves or dishonesty.

Her attempts to justify it are pathetic. She wasn't starving in a war zone and stealing food to survive and keep her kids alive. Shop should've refunded or exchanged by the sounds of it. Annoying that they didn't, but that doesn't mean she's entitled to nick stuff to reset the balance.

ruethewhirl · 20/01/2026 20:41

She sounds like she has absolutely no morals. Yes, I’d judge.

Pestosalmon · 20/01/2026 20:44

I wouldn't judge and it wouldn't bother me.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 20/01/2026 20:48

Yuck, I’d judge. Really skanky behaviour.

Bananafofana · 20/01/2026 20:51

Yes I’d judge. I also judge (former) friends who steal towels from hotels.

somanychristmaslights · 20/01/2026 20:55

Sounds like you’re talking about primark. So she swapped the clothes she had for something new? Yeah, totally skanky behaviour. You you expect cheap clothes to go bobbly.

Hohumdedum · 20/01/2026 21:18

Yes, I would judge her.
The solution to shops with crappy quality clothes is to buy clothes elsewhere, not to nick their stuff.

inkyspells · 21/01/2026 08:39

Yeah I just found it wrong.
I guess £20 is a lot to loose for some people

In her shoes I'd be furious and taking it to the CEO/Social Media 🤣 probably winding myself up to no successful outcome, but it wouldn't occur to me to take something.

I'm not sure I'd judge someone else for doing it in those circumstances though, not in any significant realtionship altering way anyway.

Mirrorx · 21/01/2026 08:43

It doesn't matter how cheap something is, it still needs to be fit for purpose.

Plantanglenet · 21/01/2026 08:53

Her mistake was to cut the label out of the clothing . That’s why they didn’t take it back . She should have sucked it up .

babyt2020 · 21/01/2026 09:08

I wouldn’t end a friendship over it, yes it’s wrong but she didn’t steal from you 🤷‍♀️

Jorge14 · 21/01/2026 18:05

I’m surprised she couldn’t get a refund to be honest but she’s still in the wrong.

carchi · 21/01/2026 18:20

Mirrorx · 21/01/2026 08:43

It doesn't matter how cheap something is, it still needs to be fit for purpose.

Exactly it's about time manufacturers and suppliers took some care and responsibility for the products they make/sell instead of just looking at their profit margins.

Unforgettablefire · 21/01/2026 18:21

I’d judge her more for nicking something that’s equally as shit quality.
No I don’t shoplift. No I don’t condone it but you’re going to shoplift clothes be hung for a sheep as a lamb.
Sounds like Primark, their stuff has always been shit quality and the prices have risen hugely.

dancingthroughthelightningstrike · 21/01/2026 18:24

I couldn’t get too worked up about something like this. She was pissed off and took petty revenge.

Pedallleur · 21/01/2026 18:29

Next thing will be to wear old clothes to the shop, try on new ones and walk out wearing them assuming you can remove the tags.
