New Look gave me a printed receipt instead of insisting they could only email it!

Have they had a change of heart!? Shock

Haven’t been in there for ages as I kept getting rudely told I couldn’t have a receipt they could only email it because that “was their policy.”

Nipped in today as they had a cheap pair of gloves that I urgently needed and the assistant was as nice as anything and asked if I wanted a receipt and I said “yes” fully expecting her to insist I give her my email address and she just printed it out and I went on my way.

Just wondered if it’s a fluke or if all the shops have changed.

In more general terms: This whole situation about receipts is complex. There is no legal requirement for a shop to issue a receipt. That said, there are obviously sensible and practical reasons why you would want one. This is where shops policies can cause problems. Your email address is valuable to them and potentially leads to an increase in spam.

May l suggest 2 ways forward.

  1. Set up a separate email account for receipts and don’t use it for anything else.
  2. Ask for a VAT receipt, saying you want it for tax purposes where they are insisting on email receipts only. This would almost always require a paper receipt. Although some retail outlets won’t know what you are talking about.

Why does it matter? I don’t understand the issue here.

Why does it matter? I don’t understand the issue here.

Because of all the various reasons mentioned on the thread. Plus on a personal level, I have an unusual name which is quite hard to spell and always results in several minutes going back and forth with them saying “what?” etc, taking up my time. And if they get it wrong, I don’t get the email with the receipt and I’m buggered if I want to exchange the item. That’s why.

But as I’ve mentioned, it was fine in there yesterday so I’m hoping New Look have listened to us.

Why does it matter? I don’t understand the issue here.

It's data protection and consumer rights.

It's playing fast and loose with customers rights and pretending they can over rid the law.

If you don't understand perhaps youd like to find out why it matters and why people care rather than trying to belittle others and trying to make out it's a non issue.

Wonderknicks · 21/01/2026 08:50

Dunelm have stopped asking as well. TBF they always gave a paper one easily enough but it still annoyed me.

As well as the reasons already given if you read the thread, I have no desire to stand and read my email address out at a busy shop counter.

HollyIvie · 21/01/2026 09:27

Email their customer services team with your views. I have and also said I’m not impressed with their staff attitudes around this issue as believe a consumer should have a choice.
For data protection I really don’t want everyone around me to know what my personal info is and really don’t want more spam.
The more people that contact them the more likely they are to give their customers choice in whether to have a printed or email receipt.

About a year ago I went in with DD. At the counter they asked for her email address. I said No give us a paper receipt. She said (rudely) Till couldn’t print receipts/ paper free/save the planet etc. I said no. She has already processed payment. She said we wouldn’t be able to exchange without a receipt. I said give me a paper receipt or a refund. She said we would need to wait while she asked the manager. I watched her walk across the floor. The Q was building behind me. I explained to DD that this is how retailers try to bully you for personal information and NOT to spell out her email address in a shop where she can be overheard. I watched as rude assistant walked to the other end of the floor. U-turned and returned without speaking to anyone. Grumpily printed a receipt (from till that ‘couldn’t’ print). I then explained to DD that we had a choice of shops and did not need to put up with lying or bullying. Neither of us have returned in a year.

Yes.

Of course, the 3rd way forward is not to shop at New Look, which is the option I've chosen.

Me too. As someone pointed out, they have nothing particularly unique or special to offer in terms of products or pricing

BashfulClam · 21/01/2026 10:20

We set up a dedicated e-mail for receipts so that any sp goes there. It’s also handy as the e-mail is easier to find as it’s all in one place. We are going to add insurance docs and warranties to it as well.

Quite a few shops do this now, I always say no to emails and would like it printed. I think they want your email so they can constantly spam you.

And it saves paper, so they like to tell themselves it’s saving the planet, too.

I just tell them no thanks, my inbox is always far too cluttered up anyway.

BashfulClam · 21/01/2026 10:26

I was in just after Christmas and I wasn’t even asked for an e-mail address which is weird. Holland and Barrett link points and vouchers to your e-mail

CreativeGreen · 22/01/2026 17:37

Wyse lost a sale from me today, right at the last minute, for doing this.

igelkott2026 · 22/01/2026 17:56

I'd just say no I'm in a hurry and don't have time to spell it out for you.

SparklyGlitterballs · 22/01/2026 17:59

My DD works for New Look. It's a lie that they can't give printed receipts. However the staff are reprimanded if they don't get e-receipts (in her branch anyway).

Yeah, usually that works, but this woman just said 'I need an email address' and when I said seriously, I can't buy this without giving you my email address?' she said 'well I just won't be able to issue a receipt'
