Personally I think good for brooklyn for saying his side of the story.
I'm sure there's so much more he could day if he wanted to, he hasn't even touched on David's affairs
and how that affected the whole family

But I've never heard of someone signing a deal to sign away the rights to your own name
What the hell

I don’t get this either

HarryPotterandtheClimateofFear · 20/01/2026 13:50

I presume what he means is when he decided to double-barrel with her name his parents wanted him to agree not to accept money for endorsements etc using the name Brooklyn Beckham. That’s just a guess though.

TheFlis · 20/01/2026 13:51

The Beckhams have their names, plus iterations of them (e.g. Beckham 7) plus all their kids names trademarked. They did it years ago.

Username19893847477374 · 20/01/2026 13:52

On another thread they'd heard somewhere that the Beckhams had an issue with them using Peltz and Beckham hypenated because of the Peltz name being associated with Epstein. So they said just use Peltz or Beckham, but brooklyn wanted the celebrity name Beckham AND to keep Peltz, which is what kick started this whole thing. apparently

Can't remember which thread but one of the other 4 threads about this topic!

RollOnSpring26 · 20/01/2026 13:52

But how can someone else own your name? And what where they trying to do? Get him to sell his rights to his name .? Who was going to pay who ?

OP posts:
MrTwisterHasABlister · 20/01/2026 13:53

It would be to protect Brand Beckham - they seemingly wanted him to agree that all future projects / endorsements for his new name had to be cleared through their lawyers.

fashionqueen0123 · 20/01/2026 13:54

And someone else can name their kid Brooklyn if they want. If they had the same surname

That’s nuts!

RollOnSpring26 · 20/01/2026 13:55

So do his parents own his name then ?

Surely he can add another surname onto his own name like quite a few men do now, when they get married, they both co join names

OP posts:
TheFlis · 20/01/2026 13:56

Lots of celebs trademark their names. It’s so that a brand can’t for example, come up with an aftershave or whisky and call
it David Beckham even if DB had no involvement with it.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 20/01/2026 13:58

People are fucking weird about names.
I was brought up being told that my surname wasn't really mine as I'd get married and change it one day. Like I was lesser than my brothers because it is their real name. They also say the same about the next generation. My nephew is the most important apparently as he's the only male in that gen with our family name.
As it happens I've never got married but did change my name by deed poll. Apparently that's not my real name either because I made it up. Confused

If i was Brooklyn I'd be opening a load of shit companies called Beckham just to piss my parents off!

Yeah that would be hilarious, they must hate the fact she's also added beckham
to her name then ?

You are right though people are weird about names

Ditch it entirely?

Just go by your first name like Cher and Madonna.

Nn9011 · 20/01/2026 14:25

Yes I think a lot of people aren't understanding this. As a celebrity you can licence your name. Think of popstar's perfumes - Britney and Ariana Grande for example. They don't actually make their own perfumes. There is a company who do perfumes, they made a deal with celebrities to licence their name for the selling of the product, sometimes this will include advertising, sometimes it won't, it just depends on the level of the deal.
So if he was being asked to sign an agreement for his name, it's a bit like Harry and Megan not using HRH, he wouldn't be allowed to bring out any new products or companies that use his name or Beckham in some way without permission from whoever he signed his name to.
Likely it was to prevent Nicole from using her double barreled name for her new products she was launching. Which is ironic when you consider VBs clothing line is a disaster only held afloat by her makeup brand and saved by DB investing after she nearly went into liquidation.

To be fair it's not just him wanting "the celebrity name" it's his name. His parents don't own it. When you have children their names are theirs as much as yours is yours whether you're a celebrity or not.

Favouritefruits · 20/01/2026 14:32

There’s Brooklyns side of the story and then there’s his parents side of the story and the truth will be somewhere in the middle!

He’s a nobody he hasn’t ever lived in the real world, he’s never had a real full time job and I’m sure lacks real life skills experience. His parents I’m sure did what they think was best and he’s rebelling like all children do at some point!

Yup she is millions in debt.

Lots of celebs trademark names. Didn't Kylie (Minogue) have an issue a few years back with Kylie Jenner? So I do get that part and don't think it's unreasonable. I suppose in theory it's like a child of say Coco Chanel creating a business model with their name that doesn't suit the original brand. (I know coco chanel didn't have children im using her as an example of a well known brand)

There isn't a teacup in the world that's small enough to have this storm in.

I’m sorry, I find this such an odd take. If he’s never lived in “the real word” that’s down to his parents. They chose to raise him as a super star, plaster his face all over social media, make it impossible for him to ever blend in or be normal.

To be fair to him he has had a go at a few actual careers, it would have been easy for him just to float along on the family money and name. He gets a lot of flack for not being that good at photography or cooking but he was always fair for his age, just not an outstanding star, and he would have probably done better if they’d given him time to learn away from the public eye rather than chasing quick cash constantly.

Yes imdo feel bad for him that we wasn't able to just live a normal life out of the public eye, must be horrible to grow up always having to put on a show

Maybe this will make people think twice about the potential consequences of making your family into a brand and money making thing, esp when you've already got more than enough, I mean what's the point

Yes, I think they’d have a much better relationship and a happier son if they’d given him a more private normal upbringing. There’s only going to be more of these kind of stories over the next few decades as the kids currently splashed over social media grow up.

PinkArt · 20/01/2026 18:33

Jo Malone is a good example of name rights. She sold her eponymous company to Estee Lauder, who still sell 'Jo Malone' products that are nothing to do with Jo Malone the person. As part of that deal Jo Malone the person can no longer use Jo Malone as her name for business, so her new company Jo Loves only refers to her as Jo. Even their 'about Jo' section doesn't mention her full name!
The Beckhams as a business will have some sort of copyright or trademarks in place over all parts of Brand Beckham, including their kids names. I'm sure their argument is that it protects them from others making money from their names but obviously it also means they can make money from them.
The difference between a Beckham kid and someone like Jo Malone though is that I'm sure his name was protected long before he was an adult and had any say in the matter. I'm not #TeamBrooklyn as I'm sure there's been some terrible behaviour on all sides, but - like with Prince Harry - there has to be some consideration of what it means to a person to be famous before they were even born. Harry's future job was decided before his birth, Brooklyn was on Top Of The Pops in utero!
