Just what the fuck ? If Europe give in to his demands because he’s now threatening tariffs then where does it end ? He’ll be claiming they need Mexico and Canada next FOR SECURITY and if anyone disagrees - Tariff’s !
I would really like to hear off trump supporters, do you think this is okay?

Spending less on defence and more in welfare and infrastructure is not something undesirable, but desirable, in my most deep conviction.
The less armed you are, the less armed the enemy needs to be and so on and on, till there is no need for weapons. Like UK police force not carrying guns generally so there is less armed criminals around.
The problem is the agressor. Their actions force a reverse in a good policy. And more money needs to be spent on manufacturing weapons.
I do not think that investing billions in rockets, missiles and rockets is more beneficial to humankind than spending them in healthcare, research and clean energy, plus the upkeep of our ill and disable.
But, in the current circumstances, there is no other option than up our armament, training and readiness.
I would take with a pinch of salt that Europe cannot defend itself, by the way. They already had warning enough of Trump intentions during his first go at being POTUS. We are not blind and deaf. We do have a good intelligence service, we do.

Agree. I read yesterday that nato and the allies military combined is bigger than the US.

so while the US thinks it has the “biggest and best” and constantly tells us so, when you compare the numbers NATO is stronger.

also as we’ve seen with healthcare, having the highest per capita spending on defence doesn’t necessarily mean the best…

Sunnyside4 · 19/01/2026 13:05

I don't totally understand politics, but I've been saying for days Trump is as bad as Putin, ie he thinks he can just have land from another country. It might not cause a war with the same impact as Russia/Ukraine, but could have a major impact on the world in other ways.

pandowo · 19/01/2026 13:07

NotTerfNorCis · 19/01/2026 11:54

Has anyone seen this letter to he sent to the Norwegian government?

Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a “right of ownership” anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT

This is beyond embarrassing. What a disgusting, petulant child. 'You didn't give me the Peace Prize so I'm gonna invade an ally!'

🤣 what a fucking narc

Economics is not my strong point.

does the rest of the world need US trade so badly that these tariffs will actually impact them? does your average company in the UK for example export so much to the US it will destroy them if they don’t?

cos it seems to me we’ll be just fine buying Australian, Indian, Chinese and Korean goods.

i saw Mark Carney is trialling vehicle deals with china now as well as expanding the Korean/japanese imports. US car industry is down 39% just from Canada choosing not to trade. If we all did that the only country suffering from the tariffs will be the US?

if denmark pull their supply chains for insulin, viagra, mounjaro etc, plus maersk and their shipping, the US could really be in the shit.

We can have companies with heavy losses or going down in the short term. Depending on how specialised they are. But, as you very well say, if we take the initial hit, then we will trade elsewhere and US will suffer. We can show our teeth by stop using or buying from US corporations too. And by creating our own IT: own Facebook, own Amazon, own Paypal..... That would actually be quite a lot of $$$$$
I think allies do not want to burn all bridges on the account of one deranged president. But, if it comes to it, the world order will change. And it will not be on favour of the US. Neither will be turned back to what it was just like that. If it flips, it will stay so, I think.

Papercompany · 19/01/2026 14:46

That letter is absolutely awful....I had to check if it was real. Dreadful. How on earth can North America sit back while this giant man child tries to start a World War?! He is deluded...and the American system is broken if there is no mechanism to remove him from office. Surely most of the 340 people in America have no appetite for 'taking' Greenland?!!!

ShetlandishMum · 19/01/2026 14:52

MushMonster · 19/01/2026 12:41

Hold on a minute.... I need to shake my head and rub my eyes.... you telling me that the POTUS sent THAT letter to the government of Denmark/ Greenland?!?!?!

No. Norway.

That bloke is going to start world war 3,I did like him but now I think he’s batshit crazy,we can’t back down an let him win,can we not just buy stuff elsewhere?

Out of interest and not trying to start an argument, what did you like about him? Personally I never could stand him

SaffyWall · 19/01/2026 15:08

Tiswa · 18/01/2026 13:55

I think with tariff it depends (and apologies if I am wrong)

so what is means is for a $10 product a $1 tax is paid to the government by the company importing into that country.

where it gets tricky is who actually takes that cost and for the most part what happens is that $10 product becomes $11 for the end consumer - the US public. Which also may be less stuff is imported and the company exporting is affected as sales could fall

but yes whilst the government gains the US public loses.

That's not quite right. The extra $1 is paid by the customer who is importing the product, so it doesn't immeadiately impact the UK company selling the product.

If I sell an item to America the price of the item remains the same (allowing for currency fluctuations) but the customer will have to pay an extra 10% tax on when they receive the item - this is usually done via the freight company ie. DHL or UPS. The freight company then pass the money on to the US goverment.

I work for a company the exports a (very specialised) UK made product all over the world, including the US. Trumps hysterical tariffs are a total pain for us because they introduce so much uncertainty in to the market and make people reluctant to place orders until they really, really need to. However we are still in a relatively positive position as our competitors are mainly in China, and face much higher import taxes, so our products are still competatively priced. However - it might all change tomorrow!!

SaffyWall · 19/01/2026 15:10

@Tiswa Sorry - I've just re-read what you've written and think that we're both actually saying the same thing!

tobee · 19/01/2026 15:29

Small point but I think Denmark supplies Ozempic/Wegovy to the US as it's made by a Danish company - Novo Nordisk. Mounjaro is made in the USA by Eli Lilly. However, Ozempic/wegovy is still big in the USA currently.

To me the main possible beneficiaries of this move by Trump are Russia and China. Russia because they want the break up of Europe/nato/the west generally. China will be licking their lips about possible trading deals; coming in from the cold with their copycat cheapo cars, phones, TVs etc

SaffyWall · 19/01/2026 15:43

China don't just make the copycat stuff though - they're part of the supply chain for almost everything that has a battery or a piece of silicon in it. Every iPhone is currently made there which does make the heavy taxes on Chinese imports seem like a questionable idea - but then most of Trump's ideas make my head explode.

Serpentstooth · 19/01/2026 16:14

Dear Pigly Best President Ever of the United States of America. Your country is 250 years old. Greenland has salted fish older than that but no hamburgers so I'm afraid they were definitely there first. We understand you come from a young country and have immature, unformed beliefs, like those of an untutored child, but we can't be forced to share your delusions, particularly the one about bringing peace to a number of skirmishes and deserving a Nobel Peace Price. We cannot compete with FIFA and congratulate you on bringing Peace to Football. No President has ever brought so much Peace to Football before, everybody says so. It's a unique achievement and you are definitely The Best at that. Only you could have achieved such a win, There has never been a President like you before and never will be again. Everybody in the world says so. Be happy, we congratulate you, don't make us release our Huskies.

Well not him personally,he just got stuff done, didn’t take anyone’s shit, cracking down on migrants BUT he’s alienating the whole world, having to show you’re social media history to enter, tariffs, wanting to take over Greenland,(he only wants Greenland so him and his billionaire friends can build bunkers)

LupaMoonhowl · 20/01/2026 06:54

Eyesopenwideawake · 18/01/2026 17:35

Trump is doing what Putin tells him to do – in this case destroy NATO. Neither of them care a jot about how this will affect their citizens.

Utterly ridiculous statement!
NATO is meaningless without the US.
Europe has been outsourcing defence to the US done WW2 - so shouldn’t whine when the US decides how to conduct that defence.

pandowo · 20/01/2026 07:06

Can’t we along with Europe make our own kind of nato? Trumps don’t want a part of it obviously, so let him carry on ?

Europe were fighting like ferrets in a sack over the Covid vaccine. Every country for itself. There is no ‘Europe’ just a game of smoke and mirrors with fat cat beaurocrsts with their snouts in the trough.

Apart from the fact that it would take conservatively 20 years to develop “an alternative” to NATO, I would be interested to see how you would pay for this.

Raise taxes?
Reduce spending on existing budgets - welfare, health, education, infrastructure, housing?
Create growth - not been possible for the last 20 years and increasingly unlikely if higher tariffs are imposed.

Which political party would be elected on a tax more, spend less platform?

Lifestooshort71 · 20/01/2026 07:45

The man is a bully and we need to stand up to bullies.

steppemum · 20/01/2026 08:03

The scariest thing is that Putin is watching Trump and laughing and egging him on.

Trump is breaking up NATO. Putin would be delighted if Trump broke up NATO, the main reason Russia invaded Ukraine was that Putin thought Ukraine was going to join NATO and he didn't want NATO on his doorstep.

If Europe and US divide and are no longer supporting each other, then Putin becomes the most powerful, and he will calmly walk in to any country he chooses and take over. Do not underestimate how much the Russians believe they own all the countries that used to be under the influence of the USSR. Vast tracks of Eastern Europe, including East Germany and all of Central Asia are in their sights, and we would be fools to think otherwise.

Trump is playing right into Putin's hands.

Oh, and why is no-one talking about the millions of dollars of mineral reserves in Greenland? If this was just about security, then sending in a load of US troops to reinforce the existing US military base on Greenland would be enough and wouldn't cause any international tension. Trump doesn't want Greenland just to put troops there for security, he wants to own it, so he has the mineral rights.

Serpentstooth · 20/01/2026 08:17

Pigly is all about ownership. He wants to take Greenland for himself. Not for USA: he will believe it's his. He sees it. He wants it. He takes it. It's mine. He approaches everything in this way. Ask the women who have been unfortunate enough to encounter it. He should have been in prison long since.

Yes!!!! Let's go with this!
I think the EU already has an agreement. But a whole Europe one should be our saving grace indeed.

BreakingBroken · 20/01/2026 20:03

I’m pleased with Mark Carneys Davos speech and happy he’s refusing to pay Trump to sit on the peace board!

Serpentstooth · 20/01/2026 20:17

NATO is practically useless without USA. Just numbers - arms, soldiers, air power etc. He knows it, that's why he can be so forceful. Nobody expected USA to betray it. He has, as he says, all the cards. Bastard.
